JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, July 13, 2013) Dale Nottestad of Cambridge charged to the front of the 18 car Late Model field on Saturday night to claim the Tired Iron Promotions Bill Collins Memorial 50 lap feature. The victory marked Nottestad’s third time in the 2013 season that he has seen the checkers first as he tries to close the gap at the top of standings behind point leader Zack Riddle.

Tyler Peterson and John Ovadal Jr paced the field to the drop of the green flag. Peterson took early control of the top spot as he drifted high in front of Ovadal exiting turn two on the opening lap. Stephen Scheel tried to follow Peterson under Ovadal as they raced side by side. Contact between Scheel and Ovadal on lap three resulted in Scheel spinning to bring out the first of two cautions. Both drivers were forced to the rear of the field for the restart allowing Chris Quam to line up behind Peterson with Kevin Knuese in third. As racing resumed, Quam went to work on the low side of Peterson, moving into the lead on lap six as Nottestad entered the top five. On lap eight, Tory Bagley moved up to third with Nottestad in his tracks for fourth. Two laps later, Nottestad made a move to get by Bagley for the third spot. Meanwhile Peterson continued to apply heavy pressure to Quam at the front. Nottestad joined the leaders on lap 14 as he moved under Peterson looking for second. Nottestad cleared for second a lap later and quickly moved alongside Quam at the point. Nottestad claimed sole possession of the lead on lap 16 and immediately began to stretch his lead while Quam tried to hold off Bagley for second. Bagley eventually took over the runner up spot on lap 26. Trent Erdman moved into the third spot just before the final caution slowed the field on lap 46 setting up a four lap shootout to the finish. But Nottestad was never seriously challenged once the green flag waved again as he powered to the checkers to get the win. Bagley finished second followed by Erdman, Quam and Shaun Scheel.

In Sportsman action, it was Jim Tate Jr of Deforest claiming his seventh feature win of the season as his lead in the standings continues to grow. Jason Dunn and Jason Kubicz led the field to green. After a side by side battle to open the action, Dunn claimed the lead on lap two. But one lap later, Dunn spun in turn two to bring out the sole caution of the event. Kubicz restarted as the leader with Terry Wangsness on his rear bumper. As racing resumed, Wangsness took a look to the low side of Kubicz. Jason Thoma joined the fight for first as they raced three wide on lap four. Thoma claimed the lead momentarily with Tate in tow for second. Tate quickly charged under Thoma as he took over the top spot on lap six. The top two began to pull away from the rest of the field and continued to do so as Bob Hansberry moved up to third. The leaders ran single file the rest of the way with Tate crossing the stripe first for the win. Thoma was second with Hansberry, Steven Sauer and Wangsness rounding out the top five.

Jefferson’s Dan Birkett picked up the win in the 20 lap International feature event. Merek Pankow took the early lead from the pole on lap one. Birkett moved past Tytus Helgestad for second on lap two as he and Pankow opened up a big lead over the rest of the pack. Birkett pulled up behind the leader as he waited for an opportunity to make his move. On lap nine, Birkett drove to the low side of Pankow. A lap later, Birkett was out front with Pankow now second and Mark English trying to run them down in third. But Birkett stayed strong out front as he showed the way to the checkers for the win. Pankow came home a career best second followed by English in third. Chris Chenoweth and Mike Lambert rounded out the top five.

Tony Ciano of Janesville captured his third consecutive Hobby Stock feature after winning the 25 lap event. Scott Riemer grabbed the lead on lap one with Anthony Lloyd up to second. On lap two, Lloyd motored past Riemer for the top spot while Phil Wuesthoff moved into third. Wuesthoff slipped by Riemer on lap seven as Ciano moved into the top five. Ciano moved quickly towards the front, claiming fourth on lap 11 and third two laps later. With ten laps to go, Ciano dropped to the bottom of the speedway as he drove around Wuesthoff for second and set his sights on Lloyd at the front. On lap 18, Ciano got a good run off turn two, drawing even with Lloyd as they raced down the backstretch. Ciano took over the point with six circuits remaining as he drove off to win his third straight. Lloyd came home second followed by Wuesthoff, Lucas Buckingham and Chester Williams.

Jefferson’s Chris Gottschalk picked up the victory in the 20 lap Road Warrior main event. Jordan Lamb led lap one with Brett Carson close behind in second. On lap two, Carson drove by Lamb to claim the lead with Tadd Douglas in tow for second and Gottschalk in third. On lap five, Gottschalk went to the outside and fired into the lead just before the yellow flag slowed the action. On the restart, Sweeney took a page out of Gottschalk’s book as he drove around the high side and into the third spot. Sweeney slipped by Carson on lap nine for second while Gottschalk was increasing his advantage at the front. Gottschalk cruised over the final circuits as he saw the checkers first for the win. Sweeney finished second with Rob Lange, Carson and Bill Reynolds completing the top five.

Kyle Stark of Waterloo got out front early in the 20 lap Bandit feature and drove away to get the win. Tyler Deporter led early from the pole with Noah Pankow dropping into second. Stark drove way high as he charged forward in the outside groove. After an early caution, Stark returned to the outside next to Pankow for second. Stark got by Pankow and kept moving forward past Deporter for the lead on lap six. Stark began to check out from the pack while Derek Dixon moved up to second on lap eight. But Stark was already well on his way to the checkers to grab the win. Dixon was second followed by Nick Schmidt, Josh Rusch and Josh Marx.
