Jarlsberg Rebounds for Win

by Andrew Schaller

JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, August 11, 2012) After an early melee sent Kyle Jarlsberg to the rear of the field, the Jefferson pilot fought his way back through the pack to capture the Brown Heating and Air Conditioning 50 lap Late Model main event. The victory allowed Jarlsberg to join point leader Casey Johnson as the only three time feature winners of the season thus far.

Brady Liddle and Chris Quam led the field to the green as Quam grabbed control on lap one. Liddle dropped into line with Trent Erdman and Noel Ramge battling for third. The top four broke away from the rest of the field slightly as Quam continued to show the way. On lap five, Erdman began to creep up on the low side of Liddle looking to take second away. Erdman made the pass on lap six as Ramge tried to follow. The first of several cautions waved on lap 11 when Jarlsberg and Shaun Scheel got together down the front stretch resulting in Scheel spinning into turn one. Both drivers were sent to the rear for the restart as Jarlsberg began to his trek back to the front. As racing resumed, Quam began to feel the heat from Erdman for the top spot. Each lap, Erdman got a run on the low side entering turn one, but Quam would power back to the point down the back stretch. This continued lap after lap until a caution at the mid-way point of the race slowed the action. Quam and Erdman renewed their battle for the lead through two more cautions until Erdman got loose entering turn three on lap 39. Erdman slid up into Quam as he spun. Quam was able to hold on as he maintained the top spot for the restart. This time it was Liddle lining up behind Quam as he took a turn challenging for the lead. Liddle took a shot on the low side of Quam, drawing even with four laps to go. ON lap 48, Liddle slid up in turn two as the two competitors made contact sending Liddle around and bringing out the caution. Both drivers were forced to restart in the back handing the lead over to Jarlsberg who had methodically picked his way back to the front. Alex Papini restarted behind Jarlsberg for the two lap shootout to the finish. Jarlsberg took the green as he powered away from Papini on his way to the checkers. Papini was second followed by John Ovadal Jr, Doug Hahn and Bruce Lee.

Kenosha's Seth Lootans picked up his first career feature victory at Jefferson Speedway after leading every lap of the 30 lap Sportsman main event. Lootans took control on lap one from fellow front row starter Jeff Schultz. Lootans pulled out to a healthy lead while Steven Sauer moved up to challenge Schultz for second. Sauer grabbed second on lap eight while Kody Hubred moved into third with Jim Tate Jr in tow. Lootans continued to lead as Hubred made a bid for second under Sauer on lap 11. After a four lap battle, Hubred took over the runner up position with Tate in his tracks for third. A caution on lap 19 closed the leaders up for the final six laps. But Lootans stayed strong out front while Hubred and Tate fought for second. At the checkers, it was Lootans for the win with Tate, Hubred, Mark Deporter and Tory Bagley rounding out the top five.

Mike Lambert of Madison extended his lead in the points standings by winning the 20 lap International feature event. Dan Birkett took the initial lead from the pole on lap one with Mark English up to second. English wasted little time behind Birkett as he drove under the early leader on lap two. A lap later, English was out front with Birkett falling back to second. English began to stretch his lead over the field. Meanwhile, Lambert was making his way through the pack into the top five. Lambert found himself in third by lap eight and second two laps later. Lambert began to chip away at the lead English was enjoying while Kyle Stark made his way into third. Lambert closed in on English lap after lap until finally catching the leader with two laps to go. Lambert drove to the low side of English through turns three and four as they raced past the while flag wheel to wheel. Lambert got the advantage on the final circuit as he crossed the stripe first for the win. English settled for second followed by Stark, Birkett and Neil Higgins.

Dave Trute of New Lisbon made his second visit to Wisconsin’s Action Track in the 2012 season and this time left with the hardware after winning the 25 lap Hobby Stock feature event. Wayne Buchs led lap one from the outside of the front row with Chris Matz up to second. An early caution lap two appeared for fluid on the racing surface. On the restart, Buchs and Matz opened up a lead over a cluster of cars battling for third. Zach Schmidt claimed the spot on lap five with Trute filling up this rear view mirror in fourth. Trute drove to the high side of Schmidt for third just before the second and final caution flew on lap ten when Matz lost a wheel and was forced to retire. Trute restarted in second behind Buchs as he launched his bid for the lead on the restart. Trute drove to the bottom of the speedway as he drew even with Buchs for the top spot. A lap later, Trute was out front with James Helmer pulling into third. Trute immediately opened up a large lead while Helmer worked over Buchs for the second spot. Helmer claimed the position with six laps remaining, but was unable to cut into Trute’s advantage. At the checkers it was Trute for the win followed by Helmer, Bobby Selsing, Tony Ciano and Dustin Ward.

Matt McKinney of Fort Atkinson grabbed control of the 15 lap Road Warrior feature and hung to see the checkers first for the win. Chester Williams and Jason Haas paced the field to green with Williams taking the early lead on lap one. Haas dropped back into a battle for second with McKinney while Williams showed the way out front. On lap seven, McKinney and Haas made a charge as they pulled even with Williams in a three way fight for the lead. McKinney and Haas emerged side by side for the top spot with McKinney gaining control of the position on lap 12. A caution with three laps to go set up a shootout to the finish, but McKinney stayed strong our front as he drove to the checkers for the win. Haas finished second followed by Tim Ellis, Bill Reynolds and Rodger Stephenson.

14 year old Merek Pankow of Jefferson picked up his first career feature victory by laying claim to the 20 lap Bandit main event. Pankow and Robby Robinson brought the field to green with Pankow taking control on lap one. Mitch Brockway followed into second as they two leaders began to open up a lead over the rest of the field. Pankow and Brockway continued to pull away from the pack while Michael Heimann tried to hold on to the third spot. A caution on lap 17 erased the advantage that Pankow was enjoying and closed up the field for the three lap shootout to the finish. But Pankow was up to the challenge as he hung on to pick up the win. Brockway came home second with Josh Marx, Keith Erickson and Nick Schmidt completing the top five.
