Breunig Notches Kearns Motor Car Co. 50 at Jefferson Speedway

July 5, 2003; Jefferson, Wis. – It was double feature night at Wisconsin’s action track, with feature racing from last week’s, rain shortened, “Kearns Motor Car 50” program and the regularly scheduled racing.

Randy Breunig of Columbus notched his first Late Model feature win, in the Kearns Motor Car Co. 50 lap main event. Starting from the inside of row 5, Breunig started his journey to the front as Ken Olson drove to the early lead. Olson held the point for 28 laps as Breunig battled his way through traffic. Breunig made his way to 3rd by lap 24, behind Olson and Scott Nottestad.

On lap 28, the battle, between Olson and Nottestad, ended when they bumped in turn 3, sending Olson into the wall. Nottestad was sent to the rear and Breunig inherited the lead for the restart. From there it was Breunig, guiding the way to the checkered flag. At the stripe it was Breunig for the win, followed by Ron Bishofberger, Beau Sanden, Nick Wendt and John Ovadal Jr.

Jim Jarlsberg of Cambridge claimed top honors in the, regularly scheduled, 35 lap Late Model feature. Starting from the inside of row 4, Jarlsberg began his march to the front, as Ken Olson claimed the early lead. Olson led the way for 17 laps, as Jarlsberg made his way to the front. Claiming 2nd, from Matt Frey, on lap 17, Jarlsberg closed with Olson. Jarlsberg moved to the inside of Olson and started the, see-saw, battle for the top spot. Jarlsberg led laps 18-24, with Olson pulling slightly ahead for laps 25-27. Jarlsberg cleared Olson, on lap 28, guiding the way from there to the checkered. At the stripe it was Jarlsberg followed by Olson, Scott Nottestad, Nick Wendt and Frey.

In “Kearns Motor Car Co.,” International action Chris Quam of Stoughton claimed top honors in the 20 lap feature. Starting from the inside of row 5, Quam headed toward the point, as Troy Olson claimed the early lead. Olson guided the way for 16 laps as Quam made his way through the field, with Brent Nottestad close behind. Closing with Olson, on lap 9, Quam worked the inside for 7 laps before finding the opening he needed to make the winning pass. As Quam pulled ahead, Nottestad moved under Olson for the 2nd spot. At the flew past the checkered flag it was Quam for the win, followed by Nottestad, Olson, Scott Uttech and Mike Drays.

In the final International feature it was Derek Bettenhausen of Milton claiming top honors. Starting from the pole, Bettenhausen grabbed the early lead, and never looked back, building a strong lead on his way to the checkered flag. At the stripe it was Bettenhausen for the win followed by Troy Olson, Jim Pankow, Steve Drays and Scott Hoeft.
In the “Kearns Motor Car Co.” Sportsman action Jeremy Hayton of Palmyra won the 30 lap feature. Starting from the pole position Hayton grabbed the early lead, guiding the field to the finish. At the stripe it was Hayton followed by Jason Thoma, Trent Erdman, Tom Reents and Tony Koepke.

In the final Sportsman feature of the night, Dave Oswald of Cottage Grove claimed victory. Starting from the inside of row 6 Oswald started his trek to the checkered flag, as Jordan McBride drove to the early lead. McBride led 23 laps as Oswald battled his way through traffic. Claiming 2nd, on lap 18, Oswald closed with McBride, with Trent Erdman close behind in the 3rd spot. Moving to the inside, on lap 23, Oswald made the winning pass on lap 24. As Oswald pulled ahead, McBride found himself battling for 2nd, with Erdman. At the stripe it was Oswald for the win, followed by Erdman, McBride, Bobby Stough and Bret Schmidt.

In “Kearns Motor Car Co.” Hobby Stock action it was Jeramy Hartwig of Cottage Grove turning in the top performance. Starting from the outside of row 7, Hartwig started his move to the front, as Lincoln Keeser pulled to the early lead. Keeser surrendered the point to Pete Elgas, on lap 3. Jim Tate pulled up to bid for the top spot by lap 5, tangling with Elgas with a resulting spin and caution, handing the point back to Keeser for the restart. Making his way to 2nd, by lap 16, Hartwig moved to the inside of Keeser on lap 17, claiming the lead on lap 18. As the checkered flag waved it was Hartwig for the win, followed by Keeser, Paul Edmundson, Garrett Goth and Eaan Carson.

The final Hobby Stock feature saw Eaan Carson of Fort Atkinson make the drive to Victory Lane. Starting from the inside of row 3, Carson headed toward the front, as Garrett Goth pulled to the early lead. Goth lead the way for 7 laps, as Carson moved through traffic. Closing with Goth on lap 6, Carson was looking for an opening. The opening came, on lap 8, as Goth slipped and Carson capitalized, claiming the top spot. At the stripe it was Carson for the win, followed by Jim Tate, Jeramy Hartwig, Goth and Ken Au.

In “Kearns Motor Car Co.” Bandit action Allen Petrie claimed top honors in the 18 lap feature. Starting from the outside of row 4, Petrie headed to the front, as Joe Cross jumped to the early lead. Cross surrendered the point to Matt McKinney, on lap 7, with Petrie up to the 3rd spot. Petrie Motored past Cross and McKinney, by lap 9, claiming the point and guiding the field to the checkers. At the stripe it was Petrie for the win, followed by Cross, Peter Shelley, Don Munns and Tim Seitz.
In the final Bandit feature of the night, Brandon Riedner of Waunakee claimed top honors. Starting inside row 3, Riedner headed toward the front as Mark Joyner pulled to the early lead. Riedner made his way to Joyner by lap 10, claiming the top spot on lap 12, with Bill Sweeney close behind for 2nd. Riedner held of Sweeney’s charge, for 6 laps, as he guided the way to the finish. At the stripe it was Riedner for the win, followed by Sweeney, Bill Reynolds, Matthew McKinney and Christopher Higgins.

Next week at Jefferson Speedway it’s the “Smith Motors Mid-Season Championships,” with a 60 lap Late Model feature and extended features in all divisions.

Gates Open at 3:00, Qualifying at 5:00 and racing at 7:00 sharp.

Jefferson Speedway is on highway 18, half way between Jefferson and Cambridge Wisconsin.
