Grueneberg Grabs Papa Murphy’s Pizza 50

CAMBRIDGE, WI (Saturday, May 11, 2019)           On a chilly evening at Jefferson Speedway, the action on the track was hot and the racing was intense. Michael Grueneberg of Wisconsin Dells pounced on the lead as the Papa Murphy’s Pizza Late Model main event got underway. Grueneberg remained in control of the 50 lap feature en route, holding off any other challengers, to pick up his first win of 2019.

Dylan Schuyler and Grueneberg paced the field to green with Grueneberg holding the advantage at the completion of the opening circuit. Grueneberg cleared Schuyler on lap two while Stephen Scheel moved up to the outside of Schuyler to challenge for second. Scheel completed the pass on lap four, bringing Kody Hubred along for third. The leaders lined up single file while the battles behind them raged on. Grueneberg continued to stretch his lead as the field approached the halfway point of the race. Shaun Scheel, Dale Nottestad and last week’s winner, Jason Erickson, slowly picked their way toward the top five. By lap 25, Hubred was alongside Stephen Scheel battling for second and the field jumbled up behind them. Hubred eventually took over the second position on lap 27. Shaun Scheel followed under his brother, Stephen, to claim third just before the sole caution of the race slowed the action on lap 31. Grueneberg led the field back to green with Hubred tucked behind him in second and Shaun Scheel in third. On lap 36, Shaun Scheel made his move on Hubred, diving under him and stealing the second spot one lap later. Riley Stenjem joined the fight, grabbing third from Hubred with less than ten laps to go. Grueneberg stayed strong out front, driving under the checkers to get the win. Shaun was second followed by Stenjem and Hubred. Erickson won a great battle with Nottestad in the closing laps to come home with a top five.

Jefferson’s Jason Thoma made a late race pass to net the lead and capture the 30 lap Sportsman feature event. Tytus Helgestad and Jake Biever made up the front row at the start as they battle door to door for control of the early lead. Biever claimed the position on lap two as Mark Deporter moved up next to Helgestad for second. Deporter made the pass on lap three as moved up behind Biever, looking to lead. Deporter shadowed the early leader for several laps, until making his move on lap 14. Deporter dove to the bottom of the racing surface as they exited turn two. Drawing even a lap later, Deporter continued to inch forward. Behind them, Jason Thoma and Bobby Selsing Jr were locked in a fight for third. By lap 17, Deporter was alone on the point. At the same time, Thoma completed the pass of Selsing to gain the third position. Thoma quickly drove up alongside Biever, taking over second on lap 18. Thoma drew up behind the new leader, waiting for an opening to make his move. When Deporter got slightly loose upon entering turn one on lap 25, Thoma took advantage and began to work the low side of the leader. With three laps to go, the duo was side by side battling for control. Thoma charged into the lead on lap 29, staying out front through the checkers to claim the win. Deporter settled for second followed by Selsing, Dan Harris and Tyler Deporter.

Edgerton’s Mark English completed the clean sweep on the evening as he captured fast time in qualifying, won his heat race and claimed the 20 lap International feature. Dustin Yanke grabbed the early lead on lap two from pole sitter John Preston. Scott Hoeft followed into second on lap three and drove up alongside Yanke for the lead. Meanwhile, English had already made his way up to third as he watched the battle for the lead in front of him. English decided he didn’t want to wait for that fight to be settled, choosing instead to join that fight. English dove under the pair, making it a three wide battle. Yanke reclaimed the top spot on lap six while English charged up behind him. English drew even with Yanke, stealing the lead on lap eight. Hoeft tried to follow under Yanke as English immediately began to pull away. On lap 11, Yanke took the second spot back, but English was already well on his way to the checkered flag to get the win. Yanke finished second with Keith Bell, Hoeft and Josh Rusch rounding out the top five.

A wild 25 lap Hobby Stock main event ended with Waunakee’s Brandon Riedner in victory lane with the big win. Chuck Egli and Kenny Storkson led the field to green as they battled wheel to wheel for the lead. The remained side by side as the field stayed stacked up behind them. Two by two, eight rows deep, the field thundered around the track. Finally, Storkson gained the advantage on lap ten with Kolton Guralski following into second. The trading of paint ended on lap 11 when a melee on the front stretch involving Egli and Scott Riedner forced the caution to wave. Storkson led the pack back to green followed by Guralski in second and Brandon Riedner in third. Guralski charged to the high side of Storkson as racing got back underway. Riedner made it a three way battle, but Guralski emerged with the lead. Riedner followed past Storkson to pick up the second spot and go right to work on the new leader, Guralski. On lap 13, Riedner got under Guralski, looking to lead. Riedner moved into sole possession of the top spot on lap 15 and began to stretch his advantage. Riedner remained in control in the final laps to score the win. Guralski finished second followed by Brandon Angileri, Chester Williams and Storkson.

Jordan Lamb of Fort Atkinson captured the 15 lap Road Warrior feature event. After a first lap caution, Bill Reynolds fired past Bill Bush and Jasper Gronert to take the lead on lap one. Lamb followed up to second a lap later and began to chase down Reynolds. On lap ten, Lamb tried to high side of the speedway, moving up next to Reynolds. A lap later, Lamb moved out front and sailed to the checkers from there to get the win. Reynold settled for second with AJ Accardi, Bush and Brant Nicholson completing the top five.

Steven Rogaski of Rockton, IL, claimed the 12 lap Bandit feature race. Rianne Remsik and Josh Frank led the field to green. Rogaski charged around the outside of the front row on lap one. Rogaski took the lead and immediately began pulling away. Frank moved into second on lap two with Ashlynn Jarlsberg up to third. Jarlsberg shadowed Frank until lap seven when she moved under him exiting turn four. Jarlsberg made the pass for second on lap nine, but Rogaski was already well out front on his way to the win. At the checkers, it was Rogaski for the win followed by Jarlsberg, Frank, Gaven Smothers and Remsik.

Next Saturday, May 18, is a full program of racing presented by B&M Electric. Time trials begin at 5pm with racing at 7pm. Jefferson Speedway is located halfway between Jefferson and Cambridge on Hwy 18. Please visit jeffersonspeedway.com for more information.
