Hahn Crowned Mid Season Champ

By Andrew Schaller

JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, June 26, 2010) Whitewater’s Doug Hahn made a late race pass for the lead when a competitor experienced mechanical difficulties and went on to capture the Smith Motors mid season championship 60 lap feature. The win was Hahn’s first Late Model feature victory in the 2010 season.

Jason Deppe and Brandon Pendleton paced the field of 20 cars to green with Deppe grabbing the lead on lap one. Don Gaserude made his way to second with Trent Erdman in third. On lap 11, Dylan Schuyler moved past Erdman into third as Gaserude started to look low on Deppe for the lead. Gaserude began to lose grip on the low side allowing Schuyler to go around him into second. Caution waved on lap 22 just as Hahn found his way into the top five. On the restart, Hahn made his move to third with Jason Erickson in tow. On lap 26, Schuyler dove under Deppe, looking to lead. After a brief side by side battle, Schuyler claimed sole possession of the point and began to open up a healthy lead while Hahn and Deppe fought for second. Hahn cleared for the position on lap 44 and set his sights on the leader. Hahn pulled to challenge Schuyler, driving to his inside with ten laps remaining. The duo battled door to door until lap 58 when Schuyler was forced to pull off the racing surface with clutch problems. Hahn took control and flew to the checkers for the win. Rounding out the top five were Erickson, Kyle Jarlsberg, Casey Johnson and Erdman.

Scott Riedner of Waunakee laid claim to his fourth feature win in a row by winning the 35 lap Sportsman main event. Jim Taylor grabbed control from the pole on lap one with Adam Bleskan right behind in second. James Helmer made his way into the top five on lap 5 with Riedner on his rear bumper. By lap 15, Helmer was in third with Riedner still in his rearview mirror. On lap 21, Riedner split Bleskan and Helmer, claiming second. Riedner quickly charged up behind Taylor and looked to the bottom lane for the lead. Riedner fired past Taylor into the lead just before caution waved on lap 26. After the restart, Riedner pulled away from the pack on his way to the win. Taylor finished second followed by Helmer, Bleskan and Kody Hubred.

Ashley Smith of Lake Mills captured the 25 lap International feature event. Eric Connell and Chad Olds made up the front row at the start. The pair of drivers battled side by side, trading the lead for the opening 13 laps. Olds finally claimed sole possession of the top spot on lap 14 with Smith in tow for second. Smith quickly slid under Olds and pulled even on lap 15. Smith cleared for the lead two laps later with Mike Lambert trying to follow into second. Lambert claimed the runner up spot on lap 22, but Smith held him off to get the win. Lambert settled for second followed by Olds, Kyle Smith and Connell.

Jefferson’s Curt Thompson sliced his way to the front of the 30 lap Hobby Stock feature to claim the win in the event. Tony Ciano took the initial lead on lap one with Chester Williams following into second. Thompson found himself in third by lap 18 with Steven Sauer right behind. On lap 21, Thompson got by Williams for second, bringing Sauer along for third. Thompson made his move on Ciano for the point on lap 22. Thompson cleared a lap later and held on to get the win. Jim Tate nipped Sauer at the line for second. Rounding out the top five were Johnny Robinson and Ciano.

Bill Reynolds claimed yet another Road Warrior feature by winning the 12 lap event. Roger Stephenson lead lap one from the pole as Reynolds moved into second behind the early leader. Reynolds wasted little time as he drove to the high side of Stephenson and grabbed the top spot on lap two. Reynolds remained in control of the event, racing unchallenged to the checkers for the win. Stephenson was second followed by Leonard Reimer, Bryan Ellis and Brett Carson.

Devon Dixon of Janesville captured the 25 lap Bandit feature event. Stan Schave lead lap one from the inside of the front row with Mike White in second and Dixon riding in third. After an early caution on lap three, White got shuffled out of the second spot as Dixon motored up to challenge Schave for the lead. Dixon drove under Schave on lap four and claimed the point one lap later. Keaton Hubred followed Dixon into second and began to apply pressure to the new leader. But Dixon remained strong out front to see the checkers first for the win. Heather Stark got past Hubred at the finish to claim second. Will Rece was fourth and Phil Wuesthoff finished fifth.
