Jarlsberg Gets Third Win in 2010

By Andrew Schaller

JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, August 28, 2010) Jefferson’s Kyle Jarlsberg charged to the front of the field and held off several challenges from Doug Hahn to lay claim to the 50 lap Late Model feature event at Jefferson Speedway on Saturday night. Jarlsberg kept Hahn, the 2007 track champion at bay to secure his third feature win of the 2010 season.

Roger Behlke and Brandon Pendleton paced the field of 18 drivers to the drop of the green. Before lap one could be completed, contact between several drivers sent Trent Erdman hard into the turn three wall to bring out the only caution period of the event. Among the competitors forced to the rear for the restart was point leader Casey Johnson of Stoughton. As racing resumed, Behlke took control of the point with Bob Kahler following into second. Jarlsberg stayed on Kahler’s bumper to make his way into the third spot on lap two. By lap eight, Jarlsberg was applying heavy pressure to Kahler, looking for the runner up position. Jarls berg moved to the inside of Kahler on lap ten, clearing for the spot a lap later and setting his sights on Behlke at the front. Meanwhile, Johnson was charging his way back through the field after the early incident. On lap 17, Jarlsberg slipped under the early leader, pulling even and looking to lead. Hahn pulled up behind the duo as Jarlsberg cleared to take over the point on lap 19. Hahn followed the new leader past Behlke and into second. Hahn began to search for an opening to get by Jarlsberg as the pair of drivers pulled away from the rest of the pack. Hahn continued to ride in Jarlsberg’s tracks, waiting for the leader to make a mistake. But Jarlsberg held serve at the front to see the checkers first and get the victory. Hahn settled for second followed by Behlke, Luke Westenberg and Kahler.

Mike Acheson of Watertown led flag to flag as he went on to win the 30 lap Sportsman main event. Starting from the pole, Acheson led lap one at the stripe with Mike Winters falling in line in second and Jim Taylor riding in third. The top three lined up single file as James Helmer made his way into the top five and began to challenge for the third spot. While Taylor and Helmer battled for position, the two leaders broke away from the pack with Winters trying to find a way around the leader. Winters exhausted every possibility ¸but to no avail as Acheson held on to get the win. Rounding out the top five were Winters, Taylor, Justin Schultz and Helmer.

Kyle Smith of Lake Mills motored to the front of the field to capture the win in the 20 lap International feature event. Joe Cross and Jason Kubicz led the field to green with Cross taking the initial lead on lap one. Neil Higgins tried to follow Cross past Kubicz, completing the pass on lap six. Higgins pulled up to challenge Cross for the top spot as Smith joined the leaders up front looking to make a pass of his own. Higgins fell back in line behind Cross, allowing Smith to slip under and take away the second spot. Smith continued to move forward, pulling even with Cross at the front and taking over the top spot on lap 12. After a caution on lap 16, Smith began to stretch his lead on the way to crossing under the checkers first with the win. Cross finished second followed by Chris Gottschalk, Higgins and Kubicz.

Watertown’s Jim Tate took advantage of some good fortune to pick up his fifth straight Hobby Stock feature win. Lucas Buckingham and Jamie Dunn started the action from the front row with Dunn leading after one circuit. Buckingham stayed to the inside of Dunn as Zach Schmidt quickly moved into the top five. Schmidt pulled up to the rear bumper of Buckingham, pushing him into the lead on lap five. Schmidt followed into second and immediately drove under Buckingham looking to lead. Schmidt grabbed control of the point on lap six and started to open up a large advantage. Meanwhile, Kyle Chwala and Tate were slicing through the field and into the top five as well. By lap 15, Chwala was battling Buckingham for second with Tate following in his shadow. Chwala claimed second on lap 17 with Tate in tow for third. Tate wasted little time, stealing second away on lap 20. While Schmidt was enjoying a large lead, he began to overheat, forcing him to retire from the event and handing the lead over to Tate. Tate cruised to the stripe with the lead and win followed by Dustin Ward, Steven Sauer, Kyle Stark and Buckingham.

In Road Warrior action, it was Bill Reynolds of Watertown adding another feature win to his resume after the 10 lap event. Tina Stephenson took the initial lead on lap one with Rob Lange up to second. Lange stole the point from Stephenson before the completion of the opening lap with Reynolds right behind for second. Reynolds began to work over Lange for the lead, looking to the low side on lap three. Reynolds pulled even as they pair of drivers battled side by side. On lap seven, Reynolds got the advantage and took over sole possession of the lead. Reynolds cruised to the stripe to pick up the win followed by Lange, Bill Sweeney, Roger Stephenson and Rick Coppernoll.

Rounding out the evening’s festivities was the 20 lap Bandit feature event. Sun Prairie’s Heather Stark dominated the race to bring home the victory. Art Blakely lead lap one from the pole with Mike Heimann in second. Caution waved on lap two and after the restart, Stark powered to the outside and into the third spot. Stark continued to move forward, taking second away from Heimann on lap three. Stark pulled up to the bumper of Blakely, looking to lead. On lap five, Blakely opened the door and Stark tried to drive through. The two made contact entering turn one which resulted in Blakely relinquishing the lead to Stark. Stark quickly opened up a healthy advantage over the field on the way to the convincing win. Will Rece finished second with Brad Knapp, Heimann and Kevin Pauls rounding out the top five.

Next Saturday, September 4, is a full program of racing in all divisions. The Green Mamba Jet Car will also make a return to Wisconsin’s Action Track. Time trials begin at 5pm with racing at 7pm.
