Jarlsberg Powers to Victory at Jefferson Speedway

JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, June 09, 2012) Jefferson’s Kyle Jarlsberg returned with a vengeance to Wisconsin’s Action Track after suffering a mechanical failure one week ago. Jarlsberg powered to the front of the field en route to winning the River’s Edge Farm Market and Catering 50 lap Late Model feature event.
Rusty Hansen and Bruce Lee paced the field of some of Wisconsin’s finest drivers to the drop of the green flag. Lee claimed the early lead on lap two as Hansen tried to fight back on the low side with Trent Erdman and Jerry Eckhardt battling for third. On lap four, Hansen and Eckhardt made contact resulting in Hansen connecting hard with the front chute wall and ending his evening. Lee restarted as the leader with Erdman running second and Doug Hahn in third. As racing resumed, Lee drifted high entering turn one allowing Erdman to slide under and claim the top spot with Hahn in tow for second. By lap 12, Jarlsberg had worked his way past Lee as well as he began to work over Hahn for the runner up position. Jarlsberg drove under Hahn to steal second away on lap 13 as the top three lined up single file. Jarlsberg closed in on Erdman at the point as he began to apply pressure to the new leader. Jarlsberg stayed close to the rear bumper of Erdman, taking several looks to the low side of the leader. Jarlsberg got a great run entering turn one on lap 23. He drew even with Erdman as they raced wheel to wheel for the lead. Jarlsberg continued to inch forward until finally completing the winning pass on lap 29. Erdman dropped back into a fight for second with Hahn while Jarlsberg opened up a healthy advantage over the rest of the field. Jarlsberg cruised the stripe to get the win with Hahn edging out Erdman for second. Casey Johnson finished fourth followed by John Ovadal Jr in fifth.
Jim Tate Jr of Deforest charged to the front of the field and drove away to claim the 30 lap Sportsman main event. Seth Lootans and Kenny Au led the field to green with Au taking the initial lead on lap one. Lootans dropped back into a three wide battle for second with Terry Wangsness and Tory Bagley on lap three. Bagley and Wangsness emerged side by side until contact was made which sent Wangsness spinning to bring out the yellow flag. Wangsness and Bagley were forced to the rear on the restart handing second over to Tate with Au still showing the way. Tate wasted little time as the green flag waved once again as he charged under Au into turn one. Tate cleared for the top spot a lap later as he immediately began to stretch his advantage. Kody Hubred made a strong charge up to the second spot by lap 12, but Tate was already well on his way to picking up the win. Hubred came home second followed by Kyle Chwala, Mark Deporter and Au.
James Bell of Brodhead picked up his first career feature win in the International division after capturing the 20 lap feature event. Mike Storkson and Josh Kubicz battled side by side to open up the action with Kubicz leading lap one. Storkson fell back into a fight for second with Bell to his inside and Dan Birkett to his outside. Bell and Birkett emerged door to door for second as Storkson fell back into the pack. Bell used the low groove to slide up next to Kubicz, claimed the lead for himself on lap seven. Bell began to pull away from the pack while Kyle Stark made his way through the top five. Stark eventually claimed the second spot on lap nine as he looked to close the gap on the leader. Stark chipped away at Bell’s advantage lap after lap until finally catching him with only two circuits remaining. Stark powered under Bell as they passed by the white flag signaling one lap to go. The pair of drivers touched as they entered turn three for the final time forcing both to check up. As they raced towards the checkered flag, it was Bell holding a slight advantage to get the win with Stark settling for second. Mike Lambert, Mark English and Neil Higgins rounded out the top five.
Tony Ciano of Janesville got the front just past the halfway point of the 20 lap Hobby Stock feature and hung on to pick up the victory. Duane Deppe led lap one until falling off the pace on the second lap handing the lead to Jim Wolf. Wolf gave up the spot a lap later to Billy Robinson with Larry Moen in two for second. Moen took his turn at the front of the pack, making the pass on Robinson on lap seven with Ciano following into second. On lap nine, Ciano charged under Moen as they entered turn one. After a three lap tangle, Ciano claimed the lead as Moen tried to crossover and retake the top spot. But Ciano stayed strong out front as he held Moen at bay to see the checkers first. Moen was second followed by James Helmer, Bobby Selsing and Robinson.
Tim Ellis of South Beloit, IL, claimed the win in the 15 lap Road Warrior feature event. Matt McKinney led early on with Ellis already moving up to second on lap two. Ellis quickly drew even with McKinney on lap three as they battled wheel to wheel. Ellis took over the top spot on lap six as the leaders lined up single file. Ellis continued to hold a large lead as the laps ticked way. At the checkers, it was Ellis for the win followed by McKinney, Scott Pauls, Rob Lange and Travis Schneeberg.
An exciting finish to the 20 lap Bandit main event ended with Tadd Douglas of Jefferson sitting in victory lane. Douglas and Brad Birzer led the field to green with Doulas taking command of the lead on lap one. Josh Marx followed into second as Keith Erickson moved into the top five. Erickson found himself in third by lap four, challenging Marx for second. Erickson claimed the runner up spot on lap six as he began to cut into the lead the Douglas had already built. Erickson caught Douglas on lap 10 as the leaders began to encounter heavy lapped traffic. On lap 15, Douglas found himself trapped behind a slower vehicle while Erickson drove by on the outside. Once Doulas cleared the lapped traffic, he mounted a charge to reclaim the lead. With three laps remaining, Douglas charged under Erickson, stealing back the top spot. Douglas held on over the final laps to see the checkers first and get the win. Erickson finished second followed by Cory Jansen, Marx and Dustin Yanke.
Next Saturday, June 16, is full program highlighted by the Ken Olson’s Used Cars 50 lap Late Model feature as well as the $100,000 Celebrity Match Race. Time trials begin at 5pm with racing at 7pm.
