Lee Leads Flag To Flag at Jefferson Speedway

by Andrew Schaller
JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, July 21, 2012) Bruce Lee of Cambridge led every lap of the Cambridge Auto Repair Specialists 50 on Saturday night at Wisconsin’s Action Track en route to his first win of the season at the venue. With his win, Lee became the eighth different Late Model pilot to carry the checkers on the 2012 racing season.

Lee and Stephen Scheel paced the field to green as they battled door to door on the opening lap. Lee held the slight advantage as they crossed the stripe to complete the first circuit as the field raced two by two on back. On lap three, Lee grabbed sole possession of the top spot as he dove into turn one. Chris Quam charged to the outside of Scheel, claiming second a lap later with Shaun Scheel in tow for third. A single caution period on lap eight slowed the pack when Trent Erdman and Dale Nottestad tangled in turns one and two ending the evening for Erdman. As racing resumed, Scheel powered to the outside of Quam, getting by for second on lap ten. Doug Hahn moved up to challenge Quam next, moving to the low side and drawing even on lap 11. Lee began to stretch his lead at the front with Shaun Scheel chasing him as the two drivers pulled away from the pack. Point leader Casey Johnson joined the battle for third behind Hahn and Quam as they continued to race wheel to wheel. Quam eventually moved back into third allowing Johnson to fire past Hahn on the outside to fourth. Johnson quickly moved under Quam, clearing for the position on lap 38 only to see a large gap between himself and Scheel in second. Lee stayed strong on the point with Scheel in his tracks all the way to the checkers. Johnson finished third with Hahn and Quam rounding out the top five.

Kody Hubred of Cambridge got to the front early in the 30 lap Sportsman main event and held off a hard charging Tory Bagley to pick up the victory. Kenny Au and Josh Bilicki brought the field to green as Bilicki held the advantage to complete lap one. Bilicki took control of the top spot on lap two as Au fell back into a three wide fight for second between Hubred and Jim Taylor. Hubred gained the advantage for second on lap four while Bagley moved into the top five. On lap six, Hubred slid up under Bilicki, taking the lead a lap later with Bagley in tow for second. On lap 13, caution waved when Bilicki suffered motor failure and put fluids down on the racing surface collecting several other drivers. Once racing resumed, Bagley began to apply heavy pressure to Hubred. Lap after lap, Bagley dropped down to the bottom of the speedway in turn three and four, but Hubred was able to beat him back into turn one to hold on to the top spot. On the final lap, Bagley made one last attempt as they exited turn four. Despite minor contact as they charged to the checkers, Hubred hung on to claim the win. Bagley settled for second followed by Will Rece, Jim Tate Jr and Kyle Chwala.

Seth Reamer of Marshall survived a major melee in the 20 lap International feature and drove on to pick up the win. Mike Storkson and Devin Wild made up the front row at the start with Storkson taking the initial lead on lap one. John Handeland moved past Wild into second on lap four with James Bell in tow for third. Handeland pulled alongside Storkson on lap six. The two made contact exiting turn four sending Storkson hard into the front stretch wall and collecting the majority of the field in a wild wreck. After the smoke cleared Reamer sat at the front of the field with Dylan Buckingham in second and Brandon Wachal third. As racing resumed, Bell got around Wachal and moved up to challenge Buckingham for the second spot. As Bell raced with Buckingham, Reamer opened up a healthy advantage at the front. Bell eventually cleared for second on lap nine as he looked to close on Reamer. But Reamer stayed steady out front all the way to the checkers for the win. Bell was second followed by Buckingham, Handeland and Wachal.

In Hobby Stock action, Bobby Selsing of Edgerton made a late race move to take over the top spot and go on to win the 20 lap feature event. Jason Deppe and Wayne Buchs battled door to door for the lead to open up the action. While the fought for position, Selsing quickly made his way into the top five. Kale Peterman moved up to join the battle at the front as Buchs made his claim for the lead on lap nine. Peterman passed Deppe for second and charged under Buchs with Selsing right behind. Peterman took over the point on lap 11 with Selsing continuing to follow. Selsing began to apply pressure to the new leader, taking a peek to the outside while Peterman stayed on the bottom. With two laps remaining, Selsing dove to the low side exiting turn two. Selsing and Peterman flew past the white flag side by side for the final lap. Selsing gained the advantage as they raced down the back stretch one last time. At the checkers, it was Selsing for the win followed by Peterman, James Helmer, Buchs and Dustin Ward.

Rodger Stephenson of Cambridge captured the 15 lap Road Warrior feature event. Chad Olds led lap one from the pole with Stephenson and Jason Haas side by side for second. Caution waved on lap three when point leader Rob Lange lost a wheel down the back chute. The field restarted with Olds showing the way and Stephenson running in the second spot. As racing resumed, Stephenson began to challenge Olds for the top spot while Bill Reynolds made his way to third. Stephenson got a good run to the inside of Olds on lap ten, drawing even with the leader. A lap later, Stephenson cleared for first with Reynolds in tow for second. Stephenson fended off the challenges of Reynolds as he saw the checkers first for the win. Reynolds finished second with Bill Sweeney, Olds and Tim Ellis rounding out the top five.

Dustin Yanke of Fort Atkinson made his way to the front of the 20 lap Bandit feature and drove away to pick up the win. Tiffany Desjarlais took the early lead on lap one with Erik Bennett falling to second and Michael Heimann third. The leaders ran nose to tail until Yanke made his way the rear bumper of Heimann on lap seven. Yanke took to the high groove as they motored past both Heimann and Bennett into second. One lap later, Yanke pulled up behind Desjarlais looking to take the lead. Yanke once again moved to the outside, pulling even with Desjarlais on lap 11. Yanke cleared for the top spot on lap 12 and immediately pulled away from the pack. At the checkers, it was Yanke for the win followed by Desjarlais, Tadd Douglas, Keith Erickson and Heimann.

Next Saturday, July 28, is Piggly Wiggly Night at the Races. Time trials begin at 5pm with racing at 7pm. Jefferson Speedway is located halfway between Jefferson and Cambridge on Hwy 18. Please visitwww.jeffersonspeedway.com for more information.
