Nottestad Claims Overall, Jarlsberg and Chesmore Notch Individual Victories, in Miller Lite Twin 35’s!

By Larry & Jeanne Starr

June 7, 2003; Jefferson, Wis. – Kyle Jarlsberg of Cambridge claimed the first feature win of his career in the first, of 2, 35 lap Late Model features, at Jefferson Speedway. Starting from the outside of row 1, Jarlsberg claimed the early lead, guiding the field to the checkered flag. As Jarlsberg led the way, John Ovadal Jr. kept pace, in the 2nd spot, but was never, quite, close enough to make a serious bid for the top spot. At the stripe it was Jarlsberg for the win, followed by Ovadal, Randy Breunig Curt Thompson and Scott Nottestad.

The top 13 finishers, from the first 35 lapper were inverted, to form the starting lineup, for the 2nd half of the “Miller Lite Twin 35’s.” Ed Wolff III was unable to make the call, for the 2nd race, moving Matt Frey into the lineup.

Dan Chesmore of Janesville, a former track champion, came from a 7th place start to claim top honors in the final 35 lap feature. At the green flag Nick Wendt claimed the early lead, with rookie driver Dylan Schuyler running 2nd. Jasper Gronert, fresh off his first win (last week) made his way around Schuyler, on lap 8, claiming 2nd and challenging Wendt for the top spot. As Wendt fended off the challenge, with Schuyler staying in the fray, Chesmore made his way to the 4th spot, on lap 12, with Scott Nottestad close behind, in the 5th spot. Schuyler slipped a bit, on lap 17, with Chesmore and Nottestad moved past, in to 3rd and 4th. On lap 19, any advantage that Wendt and Gronert may have had disappeared, as a multi-car incident, in turn 2, brought out the yellow flag. On the restart Chesmore moved to the inside, past Gronert and Wendt, claiming the point by lap 20. As Chesmore claimed the top spot, Nottestad was right behind, for 2nd. As they flew past the checkers it was Chesmore for the win, followed by Nottestad, Wendt, Gronert and Ron Bishofberger.

Nottestad’s 5th and 2nd place finish placed him at the top of the overall standings, with Chesmore combining 7th and 1st, to score 2nd in the overall.

In International action, Brent Nottestad of Cambridge drove from 10th to 1st, in the 20 lap main event. At the start it was Scott Uttech at the point, as Nottestad worked his way through traffic. Steve Drays motored around Uttech, claiming the point on lap 2. Nottestad claimed 2nd on lap 13 closing with Drays. Debris on the track brought out the yellow, on lap 16, closing the field for a restart. At the green, Nottestad moved under Drays, claiming the point by lap 18. At the finish it was Nottestad for the win, followed by Steve Drays, Chris Quam, Scott Hoeft and Mike Drays.

In Sportsman Division action, Trent Erdman battled his way to the front of the 30 lap feature. Starting from the outside of row 4, Erdman headed to the front as Kyle Taylor pulled to the early lead. Taylor guided the way for 25 laps as Tony Koepke, Erdman and Dave Oswald battled their way through the field. Koepke pulled up behind Taylor on lap 12, looking for an opening. Finding his opening, on lap 32, Koepke motored under Taylor for the top spot, only to surrender it, a lap later, to Erdman. As Erdman pulled ahead, Oswald claimed 2nd, challenging Erdman. At the finish it was Erdman for the win, followed by Oswald, Koepke, Taylor and Jason Thoma.

In Hobby Stock action, Pete Elgas of Janesville, led flag-to-flag, in the 20 lap feature, guiding the field from the green, to the checkered flag. Terry Wangsness of Delavan pulled up to challenge for the lead, by lap 17, but it was too little and too late. At the finish it was Elgas for the win, followed by Wangsness, Bryon Grassl, Johnny Robinson and Jeremy Hartwig.
The Bandits rounded out the evenings racing program, with Chris Nelson of Cottage Grove besting the field, in the 18 lap feature. Starting from the inside of row 4, Nelson closed with the early leader, Justin Punsel, by lap 2, claiming the top spot on lap 3. Nelson was first at the stripe, followed by Bill Reynolds, Punsel, Bill Sweeney and Jesse McKinney.
