Bishofberger claims Late Model main
at Jefferson Speedway!

July 14, 2001; Jefferson, WI. Ron Bishofberger of Fort Atkinson claimed top honors in the, Q106 Night at the Races, 35 lap main event. Starting from the inside of row 5, Bishofberger started the long drive to the front as ken Olson of Fort Atkinson pulled out to the early lead.

Gee!  That's what the checkered flag looks like from first!  Brett Schmidt (#20) finishes just ahead of Mark Deporter (#28) in the Sportsman feature.  Both drivers were vying for their first win, tonight was Schmidt's turn!

The only, feature racing, caution of the night!  After 94 laps of caution free feature racing, this tangle, in the hobby stock feature was the only incident, in a near perfect night of racing.

Always a bridesmaid, never a bride?   That's the way it's been until tonight!  Toby Hess (#17) won the One-on-One Street Drags, after years of trying!

As Olson led the way, Randy Breunig of Columbus moved into second, closing with Olson as he looked for a way past. By lap 4, Roger Behlke of Jefferson was up to the 3rd spot and Bishofberger was running 4th. Behlke moved to the outside of Breunig, challenging the 2nd spot by lap 8, with Bishofberger biding his time in 4th.

ehlke cleared Breunig on lap 11, closing with Olson, as Bishofberger took on Breunig for 3rd. Bishofberger made his way under Breunig on lap 13, closing with Behlke. On lap 15 Bishofberger moved under Behlke, claiming the 2nd spot by lap 16. Bishofberger started looking under Olson on lap 18, pulling alongside on lap 19 and making the winning pass on lap 20.

From that point it was Bishofberger showing the field the way to the checkered flag, leaving the battles for position behind. At the stripe, it was Bishofberger for the win followed by Olson, Behlke, Breunig and John Ovadal Jr. of Johnson Creek.

Jason Erickson of Cambridge set the fast pace in qualifying with a 15.026 second orbit of the quarter mile. Jim Jarlsberg of Cambridge claimed top honors in the 8 lap Dash for Cash. Claiming victories, in 10 lap heat races, were Bill Drefahl of Evansville, Wayne Whitford of Janesville and Tim Noble of Janesville.

Moving to the feature lineup, from the 10 lap Last Chance race, were Brent Knight of Watertown, Whitford, Noble and Steve Dobbratz of Rio.

In International class action Aaron Rude of Cambridge claimed the win, in the 20 lap feature. Starting from the inside of row 6, Rude headed toward the point, as Charles Dixon of Waukesha grabbed the early lead. Mark English of Edgerton moved under Dixon, on lap 4, taking the lead on lap 5, as Rude moved up to 3rd. Rude moved under Dixon on lap 7, making his way to 2nd by lap 8, as he looked ahead to English. Closing with English on lap 12 Rude surveyed the path ahead.

Moving to the inside on lap 16, Rude battled, side by side, finally leading, by a nose, on lap 18. English moved back, on the high side, leading by inches at the white flag. As the streaked to the checkered flag, Rude pulled ahead to claim the win, by a narrow margin, over English. Rounding out the top five were, Mike Bingham of Jefferson, Steve Drays of Milton and Mike Drays of Milton.

Ed Wolff III of Clyman set the high mark in qualifying, with a 15.984 second tour of the quarter mile speed plant. Jason Uttech of Watertown and English each won a 10 lap heat race. Joining the feature lineup, from the 8 lap Last Chance race, were Doug Taylor of Stoughton, Tim Woollen of Sun Prairie, Lucas Vinje of Cambridge and Scott Vaughn of Cottage Grove.

In Sportsman division action, Brett Schmidt of Watertown led the 25 lap main event, flag to flag, claiming the first feature win of his career. Starting from the outside of the front row, Schmidt jumped to the early lead guiding the field to the checkered flag. Mark Deporter of Fort Atkinson claimed the 2nd spot by lap 15, closing with Schmidt.

y lap 20 Deporter had closed with Schmidt, treating fans to 5 laps of outstanding racing, as each driver fought for his first feature win. The pair battled, door to door, all the way to the checkered flag, with Schmidt managing to hold a slight edge. At the stripe it was Schmidt, by a fender, over Deporter, followed by Josh Courtney of Janesville, Dan Schmidt of Farmington and Dylan Schuyler of Dousman.

Courtney turned in the fast qualifying lap, at 15.943 seconds. Claiming victories, in 10 lap heat races, were James Helmer of Fox Lake, Rory Padfield of Stoughton, Dan Schmidt and Chad Reimer of Oconomowoc. Moving to the Last Chance race, from the 10 lap Consolation Race, were Chris Koepke of Fort Atkinson and Clifford Rucks of Edgerton.

Joining the feature lineup, via the 15 lap Last Chance race, were Nick Berge of Janesville, Craig Henning of Madison, Jordan McBride of Janesville and Jeremy Hayton of Hellenville.

In Hobby Stock Action, Dennis Schmidt of Watertown claimed top honors in the 20 lap main event. Starting from the outside of row 1, Schmidt claimed the early lead and never looked back. Schmidt's drive to the checkered flag was interrupted, on lap 14, by a multiple car tangle, in turn 1, that brought the first, feature racing, caution of the night. On the restart it Schmidt resumed his journey to the checkered flag, followed by Jason Thom of Waterloo, Jim Williams of Milton, Jim Pfeifer of Fort Atkinson and Nick Golich of Hebron.

Pfeifer set the fast pace, in qualifying, with a 17.013 second circuit of the quarter mile. Claiming victories, in 8 lap heat races, were Russ Nicholson of Stoughton, Ernie Witte of Johnson Creek and Bill Bush of Fort Atkinson.

Joining the feature lineup, from the 10 lap Last Chance race, were Ben Hallock of Fort Atkinson, Terry Wangsness of Delavan, Michael Bretl of Fort Atkinson and Nicholson.

Rounding out the nights racing action were the One on One Street Drags. Ryan Flannegan won the 4 cylinder competition, Clint Starks won in the 6 cylinders, Toby Hess of Edgerton won in the 8 cylinder cars and Craig Phillips of Edgerton won in the 8 cylinder trucks.

Next week is WFAW Night at the Races, at Jefferson Speedway, featuring the Blackhawk 50, plus a Dash for Cash, sponsored by WFAW and Krentz Auto Mart, and extended features in all racing divisions. As an added bonus any racer who wins their heat race and feature event will receive a $100 bonus. The Bandit division will also race next week.

Gates open at 3:00 pm., Qualifying at 5:00 pm. and racing at 7:00 pm. sharp. Jefferson Speedway is on Highway 18, between Jefferson and Cambridge Wisconsin.
