September 14, 2001; Jefferson, WI. - During day one racing, of the 21st annual Pepsi Wisconsin State Championships, Jim Jarlsberg of Cambridge claimed top honors in the "Miller Lite 50," 50 lap Late Model Feature at Jefferson Speedway.
Starting from the outside of row 3 Jarlsberg started his drive to the front, as Tim Noble of Janesville grabbed the early lead. Noble guided the way for 9 laps, holding off Steve Dobbratz of Rio, as Jarlsberg made his way through traffic. Moving to the inside, o lap 9, Jarlsberg claimed the point and never looked back, guiding the way to the checkered flag.
The race was interrupted by a single caution, on lap 16, when a pair of cars tangled in turn 1. Jarlsberg led the restart as Dobbratz battled with Roger Behlke of Jefferson for the 2nd spot. At the stripe it was Jarlsberg for the win, followed by Behlke, Ron Bishofberger of Fort Atkinson, Dan Chesmore of Janesville and Dobbratz.
Jason Erickson of Cambridge set the fast qualifying pace, with a 14.796 second circuit of the quarter mile. Moving to the feature lineup, from the first 25 lap Qualifier, were Brent Knight of Watertown and Wayne Whitford of Janesville. Jasper Gronert of Jefferson and Ken Olson of Fort Atkinson claimed the transfer positions in the second Qualifier.
In the 4 cylinder division, Brent Nottestad of Cambridge won the 20 lap "Preview feature" and set the fast qualifying pace, with a 15.780 second tour of the quarter mile.
Joining tomorrow's feature lineup, from the 20 lap Qualifier, were Rich Hinerichsen of Rockford IL, Dennis Clapp of Madison and Scott Hoeft of Watertown.
In Sportsman division action, Jay Kalbus of Oconomowoc scored the win, in the 25 lap
"Preview feature." Scott "Chico" Riedner of Waunakee set the
fast qualifying pace, with a 15.725 second orbit of the quarter mile.
In Hobby Stock Action, Brent Moe of Deforest claimed victory in the 20 lap
In Bandit division action, Eric Rucks of Rockdale won the 15 lap "Preview feature," while Bill Reynolds set the fast qualifying pace, with a 15.425 second drive around the quarter mile.
Rounding out the nights racing action were the One-on-One Street Drags where Mike Jarlsberg of Cambridge won in the 8 cylinder cars, Craig Phillips of Edgerton won in the 8 cylinder trucks, Clint Starks of Lake mills won in the 6 cylinders and Joe Beavers of Fort Atkinson won in the 4 cylinders.
Tomorrow's racing action will begin with Last Chance races, to complete the feature lineups and will be highlighted by the Pepsi Wisconsin State Championships, twin 65 lap Late Model features, as well as features in all divisions. Gates open at 3:00 p.m. and racing at 7:00 p.m.
