June 23, 2001; Jefferson, WI. - Defending track champion Dan Chesmore of Janesville turned at 12th place start into a win, in the Kearns Motor Car Company 50 on Wisconsin's Action track. Starting from the outside of row 6, Chesmore started his journey to the checkered flag as Wayne Whitford of Janesville jumped to the early lead.
Whitford was locked in a battle for the point, with Tom Dorn of Fort Atkinson, as Chesmore picked his way through the field. By lap 10, Randy Breunig of Columbus moved up to join the fray, moving under Dorn, into the 2nd spot. Pulling ahead of Dorn, Breunig drove under Whitford, claiming the lead on lap 11. When the first caution of the race came, on lap 16, for a spin in turn 2, Breunig was at the point with Chesmore up to the 3rd spot. On the restart Chesmore motored under Dorn, claiming 2nd by lap 17. Chesmore closed with Breunig, making the winning pass on lap 23, as Ron Bishofberger of Fort Atkinson closed with Breunig in the battle for 2nd. The race slowed for a final caution, on lap 38, for a fire in the engine compartment of a car. On the restart Chesmore continued to guide the way as the battles raged behind him. At the stripe it was Chesmore for the win, followed by Bishofberger, Jason Erickson of Cambridge, Andy Wendt of Watertown an Breunig. Erickson set the mark in qualifying, with a 14.909 second orbit of the quarter mile. Eric Gerlach of Palmyra won the, 8 lap, Dash for Cash. Claiming victories, in 10 lap heat races, were Jim Jarlsberg of Cambridge, Tim Noble of Janesville, Wendt and Matt Frey of Cambridge. Moving to the Last Chance race, from the 10 lap Consolation race, were Ken Piotrowski of Milton and Don Mattrisch of Whitewater. Joining the feature lineup, via the 20 lap Last Chance race, were Steve Dobbratz of Rio, Brent Knight of Watertown, John Ovadal Jr. of Johnson Creek and Beau Sanden of Janesville. In International action, Brent Nottestad of Cambridge claimed top honors in the 20 lap main event. Starting from the inside of row 6, Nottestad headed toward the point as Matt Nickel of Madison pulled out to the early lead. Mike Drays of Milton moved up to relieve Nickel at the point, on lap 3, as Nottestad was locked in a 3-wide battle for 4th. Nottestad claimed 3rd, behind Derrick Bettenhausen of Cambridge on lap 4. The only caution of the race came on lap 5, for a multiple car spin. On the restart
Nottestad moved under Drays, battling for 3 laps before claiming the top spot. As
Nottestad guided the field to the checkered flag, Ed Wolff III of Clyman closed with
Drays, claiming 2nd on lap 11 and closing with Nottestad. Wolff was never able to find the
opportunity he needed. At the stripe it was Nottestad for the win followed by Wolff, Mark
English of Edgerton Drays and Chris Quam of Stoughton. Mike Bingham of Jefferson and English each won a 10 lap heat race. Joining the feature lineup, from the 10 lap Last Chance race, were Mike Dietzen of Milwaukee, Bingham, Doug Taylor of Stoughton and Charles Dixon of Waukesha. In Sportsman division action Jay Kalbus notched the win, in the 25 lap feature. Starting from the outside of row 2, Kalbus headed toward the front as Dale Padfield of Jefferson grabbed the early lead. Kalbus was up to 2nd by lap 4, closing with Padfield. Kalbus motored under Padfield, making the winning pass on lap 12. The race stopped on lap 19, due to a scoring error, closing the field for the restart. Kalbus guided the way from the restart to the finish. As they flew past the checkered it was Kalbus for the win followed by Padfield, Todd Goldade of Stoughton, Josh Courtney of Janesville and Curt Thompson of Palmyra. Jeff Kohlhoff of Watertown set the fast qualifying pace, with a 15.912 second circuit
of the quarter mile speed plant. Joining the feature lineup, from the 15 lap Last Chance race, were Noel Ramge of Hellenville, Tom Collins of Lake Mills, Joe Wendorf of Jefferson and Ken Scott of Rio. In Hobby Stock action, Mike Cusick of Edgerton won his first feature, in the 20 lap main event. Starting from the pole, Cusick guide the field flag to flag, with Jeremy Hartwig of Cottage grove close behind for most of the race. Caution came on lap 17, when three cars tangled coming off the 4th turn and crashed into the front stretch wall. Cusick guided the field from the restart, to the checkers followed by Hartwig, Dennis Gaserude of Arena, Chuck Egli of Waterloo and Lonny Wilson of Janesville. Roger Stephenson of Cambridge set the fast pace in qualifying, with a 17.007 second loop of the quarter mile. Mike Manley of Ft. Atkinson, Jason Thom of Ft. Atkinson and Lincoln Keeser of Milton won, 8 lap, heat races. Moving to the feature, from the 8 lap Last Chance races, were Chuck Egli of Waterloo, Manley, Jay Finnegan of Milton and Scott Bush of Ft. Atkinson. In Bandit division action, Tim Seitz of Edgerton won the 12 lap main event, finishing ahead of Dave Hundley of Rockton IL, Jeff Jesberger of Sun Prairie and John Remsik of Sun Prairie. Scott Chico Riedner of Waunakee won the 8 lap heat race. Representatives of Kearns Motor Car Company and WJJO ran an 8 lap grudge match at intermission, which was won by Deadwood. Next week at Jefferson Speedway, Bumper to Bumper and WIBA FM present, the Independence day special, with a 50 lap Late Model feature, Stock Car rides for kids, the Coin Toss, Big Wheel races and Fireworks. For this special event, the schedule of events has been modified: Gates open at 2:00 pm, qualifying at 3:30 pm, Kids rides 5:15 pm to 6:15 pm, and racing at 7:00 pm sharp. Jefferson Speedway is on Highway 18, between Cambridge and Jefferson Wisconsin.
