Nottestad Notches First
LM Feature at Jefferson Speedway!
By Larry & Jeanne Starr |
Jefferson, Wis., July 13, 2002 -- Scott Nottestad of
Stoughton notched his first career Late Model feature win, in the Beaver Tree Service
Night, Miller Lite 50. Starting from the outside of row 2, Nottestad claimed 2nd, behind
Gene Olson Jr., on lap 2. Nottestad trailed Olson for 24 more laps, managing the winning
pass on lap 26. After 50, caution free, laps it was Nottestad for the win, followed by
Andy Wendt, Jason Erickson, Eric Gerlach and Mike Taylor.

Scott Nottestad (#14) makes his first
trip to Victory Lane after a feature, in a Late Model at Jefferson Speedway.
Heading toward the front! Scott
Nottestad (#14) and Andy Wendt (#18), moving in on Gene Olson Jr. (#37). Nottestad
is on his way to the win, with Wendt scoring 2nd. Olson dropped back to 12th by the
finish.
A bit of confusion in the Last Chance.

Late Model Last Chance.

Mark English (#57) edges Aaron Rude (#9)
at the finish of the International feature.

This has got to hurt! Sportsman
feature action saw many cautions. Caught behind another wreck, Kyle Taylor (#14) is
sideways ahead of Kevin Thompson (#99), Luke Padfield (#4), Dan Schmidt (#19) and Kyle
Jarlsberg (#87).
More Sportsman feature action!
Seen are Tony Shuchardt (#22), Jeramy Hayton (#81) and Chad Reimer (#19).
There are many more parked between them and the wall. Shuchardt had been
leading until this incident.

Bobby Stough Jr. (#27) won the photo
finish, in the Sportsman fast heat.
Jay Kalbus (#27), moving under Jeramy
Hayton (#81) and Tony Koepke (#32) in the Sportsman feature. Kalbus is on his way to
the win, Koepke suffered a mechanical failure before the finish.
Have you ever had one of those days?
Jason Thoma (#95) certainly has! This was the third, and finishing, blow, to
Thoma's efforts on Saturday night.

Bobby Stough (#27) looking the wrong way
into turn 1, in Sportsman feature action. He's about to collect Jason Thoma (#95),
head on, as Chico Riedner (#26) and Trent Erdman (#11) move underneath.

Johnny Robinson (#99), leading Scott
Bush (#43) and Lonny Wilson (#40) in Hobby Stock feature action. Robinson is on his
way to victory lane. |
In International division action Janesville's Mark English scored the win, in the
20 lap feature. Starting from the outside of row 4, English started his drive to the front
as Doug Taylor pulled to the early lead. Taylor held the point for a single lap, before
surrendering to Derrick Bettenhausen. As Bettenhausen pulled to the front, English was
close behind, for 2nd. Bettenhausen held off English for 4 laps, before succumbing to
English's challenge, on lap 6. Once at the point, English showed the way to the checkers,
followed by Aaron Rude, Mike Drays, Steve Drays and Bettenhausen.
In Sportsman division action Jay Kalbus was first, among the survivors, of the 30 lap
main event. Starting from the outside of row 6, Kalbus headed toward the front, as Tony
Schuchardt claimed the early lead. Caution came, on lap 14, for a spin and head-on crash
in turn 1.
Schuchardt led the restart motoring another 10 laps before a, one car, crash in turn 4,
brought the next caution. Taking the green one more time, Schuchardt led the way to lap
29, when he lost the handle, coming off the 2nd turn, crashing hard into the outside
retaining wall, collecting many cars in the process. Tony Koepke was first for the
restart, only to suffer an, apparent, blown engine at the green flag. Kalbus found himself
at the point for the final restart, guiding the way over the final 2 laps. At the
checkered flag it was Kalbus for the win, followed by Dylan Schuyler, Scott
"Chico" Riedner, Randy Padfield and Mark Deporter.
In Hobby Stock action Orfordville's Johnny Robinson led flag-to-flag in the 20 lap main
event. Starting from the outside of row 1, Robinson took the point at the green flag and
never looked back, guiding the field to the checkers. Gerald Chapman made his way to 2nd,
on lap 10, with a huge deficit, but was unable to close the gap over the remaining laps.
At the finish it was Robinson, followed by Chapman, Roger Stephenson, Lonny Wilson and
Bill Bush.
Rounding out the night's action were the One-on-One Street Drags, with street racers
coming out to compete on the quarter mile oval.
Next week Jefferson Speedway hosts the WFAW Blackhawk 50, and the Roll Over contest.
Gate open at 3:00, qualifying at 5:00 and racing at 7:00 sharp.
Jefferson Speedway is half way between Cambridge and Jefferson Wisconsin, on highway
18.
