Jefferson Speedway Race Report:

June 6, 2004; Jefferson, Wis. - Cambridge native Jason Schuler had a good day, on his return to Jefferson Speedway, claiming top honors in the “First Supply 100,” Wisconsin Challenge Series (WCS) race.

Jason Schuler (#37) returned to the track where he began his racing career.  The NASCAR Busch Series regular, made his WCS debut and went to victory in the First Supply 100 at Jefferson Speedway. For the first time since the early 1990's Jefferson Speedway saw Super Late Models take to the quarter-mile oval. Local fans had plenty to cheer about as John Ovadal Jr. (#47) took the lead from Ken Reiser and set the pace of the contest until near the halfway mark. A strong run for John Ovadal Jr. (#47) came to an unfortunate end as he had something break on his car while leading the First Supply 100.  He then hit the wall in turn four, but fortunately was unhurt. Current WCS point leader Mark Eswein (#71) did battle with eventual winner Jason Schuler during the mid portions of the race.. Fast qualifier Bobby Wilberg (#28) established a new all-time track record at Jefferson Speedway with a lap of 14.040 seconds.

Starting 5th in the field, Schuler slipped to 7th on the start and began patiently working his way forward, as Ken Reiser drove to the early lead. Reiser led the pack for 10 laps before John Ovadal Jr. claimed the point.

Ovadal opened a strong lead, for a time, looking like he had a lock on the race. On lap 47, Ovadal suffered mechanical problems that sent him spinning into the turn 4 wall, to end his day.

Schuler was running third on the restart and, as they entered the first turn, the 2nd place car of Jeff Kendall slipped up the track, leaving an opening on the bottom. Schuler seized the opportunity, streaking past Kendall and Jeremy Lepak to claim the lead. From there he paced the field for the remaining 52 laps.

At the stripe it was Schuler for the win, followed by Adam Royale, Mark Eswein, Jeff Storm and Kendall.

Three of Jefferson Speedway’s regular divisions were on hand to round out the racing program.

In Sportsman Division action Craig Henning, of Hellenville, came from a 4th place start to over take the early leader, Noel Ramge, on lap 12, of the 15 lap feature. At the finish it was Henning followed by Ramge, Tom Reents, Mark English and Jody Purdy.

In Hobby Stock action Terry Wangsness of Delavan came from 16th to claim top honors in the 20 lap main event. At the green flag, Nick Newton jumped to the lead, only to lose the point to Lincoln Keeser, on lap 3. Keeser was joined by Larry Moen, and the two traded the lead several times, as Wangsness made his way from the rear. Moving past Moen, on lap 13, Wangsness closed with Keeser, claiming the point on lap 15. At the stripe it was Wangsness followed by Keeser, Moen, Jesse Ayers and Dennis Schmidt.

Troy Yohn of Waterloo came from 17th to claim top honors in the Bandit division’s 18 lap feature. Avoiding the mayhem between him and the front, Yohn drove to 4th by lap 8, and claimed the point by lap 12. At the stripe it was Yohn for the win, followed by Rory Padfield, Bobby Selsing, Jody Krueger and Nick Klettre.
