Lindsay Scores First Feature
Win at Jefferson Speedway
By Larry & Jeanne Starr |
June 30, 2007; Jefferson WI ---
A large crowd turned out for the Independence Day Special at "Wisconsin’s
Action Track". The kids rides put smiles on the young faces as they took a
ride with their favorite drivers. All of this was leading up to a great
night of racing.
Scott Lindsay of Dousman notched his first Late Model feature win, in the
50 lap main event. Starting outside the front row, Lindsay watched Chuck
Duncan grab the early lead. Duncan led the first lap before losing the point
to Lindsay. As Lindsay led the way, Kyle Jarlsberg made his way through the
field, claiming the 3rd spot by lap 13, and closing with Duncan. Caution
came, for a spin in turn 2, on lap 15. On the restart Jarlsberg motored past
Duncan closing with Lindsay. Jarlsberg was looking to the inside, for an
opening, but Lindsay was up to the challenge as they battled for the top
spot. Behind them were, defending track champion, John Ovadal and Steve
Dobbratz battling for the 3rd spot. The race slowed, twice, for cautions on
laps 23 and 35. As they flew past the checkers it was Lindsay for the win,
by a fender, over Jarlsberg. Rounding out the top 5 were Dobbratz, Ovadal
and Doug Hahn.
In Sportsman action Scott "Chico" Riedner of Waunakee claimed his 5th
feature win of the season, in the 30 lap main event. Starting 11th Riedner
avoided the first lap chaos, as much of the field piled up in turns 3 an 4.
When the smoke cleared Riedner was up to 4th for the restart, with Greg
Ovadal at the point. Ovadal led the way until lap 20, with Riedner battling
past James Helmer for the 2nd spot, by lap 12, and closing with Ovadal.
Caution came, on lap 20, for a spin in turn 4. Ovadal led the restart, with
Riedner 2nd. Riedner moved to the inside, claiming the top spot on lap 21.
As Riedner pulled ahead, Jay Kalbus closed with Ovadal, for 2nd. As they
flew past the checkers it was Riedner for the win followed by Kalbus, Ovadal,
Dave Oswald and Helmer.
In International division action Chris Gottschalk of Jefferson notched his
first feature win of the season, in the 20 lap main event. Starting 4th,
Gottschalk claimed the lead on the first lap and never looked back, guiding
the field to the checkers. Caution came twice, on the first lap of the race.
The first caution was due to a car leaking fuel and the second was for a
crash on the front stretch, right under the flag stand, that collected
several cars. With all of that cleaned up, Gottschalk claimed the lead at
the green flag leaving the battles behind. At the stripe it was Gottschalk
for the win followed by Kyle Smith, Mark English, Mike Bingham and Joe
Cross.
In Hobby Stock action Jim Robinson of Orfordville claimed top honors in the
20 lap feature. Starting 4th Robinson headed toward the front as Greg Pruitt
took the early lead. Robinson closed with Pruitt on lap 3, claiming the top
spot on lap 4. As Robinson led the way the battle for 2nd raged behind him,
with Chet Paffel and Kyle Stark battling for the spot. At the stripe it was
Robinson for the win followed by Paffel, Stark, Jim Tate and Pete Elgas.
In Bandit action Gary Stark of Waunakee claimed top honors in the, 20 lap,
feature. Starting outside row 7, Stark headed toward the front as Matt
McKinney claimed the early lead. McKinney led the way, for 19 laps, as Stark
battled through the field. Claiming the 3rd spot, by lap 13, Stark battled
side-by-side, with Kyle Watters, as they closed with McKinney. By lap 17,
the pair closed the McKinney, launching a 3-wide battle for the top spot,
with McKinney on the bottom, Watters in the middle and Stark on the outside.
The battle lasted all the way to the checkers with Stark claiming the win,
by inches, over McKinney and Watters. Rounding out the top 5 were Stephen
Scheel and Dustin Yanke. McKinney, subsequently, failed the post race
technical inspection and was, officially, scored last in the event.
The action continues at Jefferson Speedway, with the "Tournament of
Destruction" on Tuesday, July 3. A night of "Men Metal and Mayhem," or
"Stupid Human Automobile Tricks," guaranteed to thrill kids of all ages.
Rounding out the evening will be the Fireworks show. Same admission as
Saturday night racing. Gates open at 4:00PM and the first event is at
7:00PM.
Next Saturday night, Smith Motors presents the "Mid-Season Championships",
highlighted by a 50 lap Late Model feature, and extended features, in all
divisions. There will be driver autograph sessions prior to racing, during
qualifying. Gates open at 3:00PM, qualifying at 5:00PM and racing starts at
7:00PM sharp.
Jefferson Speedway is half way between Cambridge and Jefferson Wisconsin, on
