Great way to finish a Championship season!

Steenbergen would go wire-to-wire in the feature event for the 18 cars that have already qualified into Saturday night's Twin 50-lap feature event for the Big 8 Series.

The feature was only slowed once as 2005 winner John Ovadal, Jr. broke a brake rotor going into turn three and made hard contact with the outside wall.

On the re-start, Steenbergen would hold off numerous attempts by Jarlsberg. Lap after lap, Jarlsberg would get on the inside of Steenbergen to challenge for the top spot in turns one and two. But Steenbergen would have the preferred outside line in turns three and four to pull away to the win over Jarlsberg.

Michael Bachaus would come home third with Steve Dobratz in fourth. 2007 Jefferson Speedway champion, Doug Hahn, would round out the top five.

Reynolds Jr. set a new track record with a time of 14.075 seconds (63.943 mph). The old track record was 14.105 seconds (63.807 mph) by Jason Erickson.

"We were pretty quick in practice, but to come out and get a track record, we are proud of that," Reynolds Jr. stated after his qualifying run. But, he hopes to gain some experience with tonight's preview feature in preparation of tomorrow night's Twin 50's, "We need to learn how to race here, we don't have a lot of experience. So learning where the groove is and racing side-by-side that is what I am going to be doing."

Ovadal Jr. and Noel Ramge advanced to the main event by finishing first and second in the 20-lap qualifying race. Chris Purdy and Scott Lindsay also earned starting spots by their top-two finishes in the second qualifier.

Mike Ehde, currently third in Big 8 Series points, and Brady Liddle, fourth in points, have yet to qualify for the main event. They will have another opportunity in the last chance races on Saturday night.

Bachaus and Dobratz won the odd and even qualifier heats for the cars already qualified in the main event.

Kyle Taylor and Tory Adams advanced to the qualifying races from the first consolation race while Kyle's dad, Mike Taylor along with Greg Bowers advanced from the second consolation race.

Chris Purdy held off John Ovadal Jr. to win the 15-lap Race of Champions.

The racing action will get underway at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday night. The Big 8 Series is one of five divisions, with a total of 178 cars, competing at this annual two-day race event. For more information, please visit the track's website at www.jeffersonspeedway.com . The Speedway is located on Hwy. 18 between Cambridge and Jefferson, WI.

JARLSBERG, REYNOLDS JR TAKE VICTORIES, ERICKSON WINS OVERALL AT JEFFERSON

By: Kevin Ramsell

Saturday, September 15, 2007 (Jefferson, WI) – Kyle Jarlsberg and Jon Reynolds Jr. each took home their first Big 8 Series win while Jason Erickson was the overall champion at the 27th Annual Pepsi Wisconsin State Championships at the Jefferson Speedway. The seventh stop on the 2007 Big 8 Series schedule.

Jarlsberg started on the outside of the front row and got the whole shot as Tom Powell waved the green flag for the first 50-lap feature event. Carlson, who started fourth, got by pole sitter Steve Dobratz for second on lap 3.

It was pretty much the Jarlsberg/Carlson show throughout the race as it was slowed by three caution flags. From lap 16 all the way to the checkered flag, Carlson continuously looked on the inside of Jarlsberg in turns one and two but couldn't make his car stick as he entered the backstretch.

But the role was reversed for Jarlsberg, who ran the same line the night before as he finished second to Jeff Steenbergen in the Preview Feature, as he took home his first Big 8 Series feature win with Carlson right behind him. He becomes the 18th different winner in 24 Big 8 Series feature events.

Bobby Wilberg started fifth and came home third with Erickson in fourth. Dobratz rounded out the top five.

"Carlson was real tough guy, he has raced a long time in different series and now he has been fast in a Limited Late Model. My nerves were rattling but I just kept my cool and just went for it," an excited Jarlsberg stated in victory lane. "We have been running quite a few of these (Big 8 Series races), we have gotten real close and missed a lot of them and it finally paid off."

"It was a very fun race, we raced each other real clean and didn't touch each other at all" Carlson stated afterwards. "That's how I like to do it, the best man wins and he was the better man in that race."

Jarlsberg then had to roll the 'die' to help set the invert for the second 50-lap feature. He rolled a five and then added to the number eight to create a 13-car invert for the second race.

Matt Byrne was the early leader in the second 50-lap feature event after starting on the outside of the second row. Reynolds Jr. started fifth and worked his way past Chad Stevens for second on lap 10. Four laps later, Reynolds got on the inside of Byrne to challenge for the lead.

The two battled side-by-side until Reynolds cleared him coming off the fourth turn on lap 17. Reynolds would pull out to a huge lead while Erickson worked his way past Byrne for second on lap 29.

Reynolds would cruise to his first ever Big 8 Series feature win and becoming the 19th different winner in 25 feature races.

Erickson would finish second with Byrne holding on to third over Carlson. Wilberg would come home fifth.

Reynolds, who was the fast qualifier for the weekend, expressed some concerns the night before about learning to race at Jefferson, "Ricky (Bilderback) and I talked about it on the way home last night," Reynolds stated. "I told him I didn't know how to pass here and he shared a few things. I drove the 'cuda today (in the Sportsman division) to help me get more laps and that helped me figure a few things out. I am so excited, this is just awesome, and I love this place."

Erickson's fourth and second place finish and Carlson had a second and fourth place finish caused a tie for the overall win. The tiebreaker reverted back to qualifying where Erickson qualified fourth and Carlson was seventh. This gave the overall win to Erickson.

"It's a long list of great names and a lot great competition," Erickson stated about having his name added to the list of Wisconsin State Champions at Jefferson. "We won an individual race here in 1998 and the track championship in 2005 but never been the overall champion until now."

For Carlson, he was satisfied with his weekend run, "It was a good weekend overall. We are getting the team turned around," Carlson stated. "Second and a fourth, what more can you do but just let the chips fall where they may. We had a lot of fun this weekend, everybody was lighthearted and the car was fast, we did our job and just came up a .013 seconds short from the championship."

Ryan Goldade and Bob Kahler advanced to the Twin 50's by finishing first and second in the first Last Chance race. Roger Behlke and Chad Stevens were first and second in the second Last Chance.

Mike Ehde, currently third in Big 8 Series points, earned the Big 8 Series provisional. Jason Schuler, Chris Quam, and Michael Bilderback also earned provisional starts.

Brady Liddle, fourth in the point standings, failed to make the main event after he was involved in a bad wreck in the second Last Chance race as he and Greg Bowers got together coming off of turn four causing Liddle to make hard contact with the outside wall.

The Big 8 Series has two events remaining this season. The next event will be on Saturday, September 29th for the 42nd Annual Chicago International Trucks National Short Track Championships at the Rockford Speedway.
