Schuyler Captures Finotey Refrigeration 50

By Andrew Schaller

JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, September 4, 2010) Jefferson’s Dylan Schuyler picked up his second feature win of 2010 after the running of the Finotey Refrigeration 50 lap Late Model feature at Jefferson Speedway on Saturday night. Schuyler got to the front and held off a hard charging Dale Nottestad to pick up the win.

Roger Behlke and Brandon Pendleton paced the field to green. Behlke got a little loose in turns one and two on the opening lap allowing Pendleton to move into the lead. Luke Westenberg followed into second with Schuyler already in third by lap five. Westenberg followed Pendleton until lap 12 when he began to look to the low side of the early leader in turn one. After a brief side by side battle, Westenberg slid back into a fight with Schuyler for second. Schuyler took the spot on lap 15, bringing Nottestad along for third. Schuyler went right to work on Pendleton for the point, moving under the leader on lap 20. Schuyler pulled even with Pendleton, taking the lead for himself on lap 24 as Nottestad remained in his tracks. Nottestad cleared for second just before the sole caution of the event appeared on lap 27 for a melee involving Kyle Jarlsberg and Bob Kahler. On the restart, Nottestad took a peek under Schuyler, but couldn’t make a move. Nottestad continued to apply heavy pressure throughout the remainder of the event. But Schuyler stayed strong at the front to see the checkers first for the win. Nottestad settled for second followed by Westenberg, Dan Lensing and Casey Johnson. With his fifth place finish, Johnson increased his point lead heading into next week’s Season Championships to 48 points over Doug Hahn.

Scott Riedner of Waunakee captured another Sportsman feature win on his way to wrapping up the 2010 championship in his division. Dan Schmidt and Brady Lilly led the field to green with Lilly taking control on lap one. After a brief caution on lap four for a fuel leak, Curt Thompson fired under Lilly looking to lead. Thompson claimed the position on lap six as Riedner motored into third. Riedner made quick work of Lilly for second and set his sights on Thompson at the front. Riedner closed up to Thompson’s rear bumper on lap 13 as he began to look to the low side. Riedner pulled even on lap 15 as Thompson held the slight advantage. Riedner continued to chip away at Thompson lap after lap. Thompson kept Riedner at bay until lap 25 when Riender got a good run to clear for the lead in turn four. Thompson tried a crossover move entering the next corner, but Riedner stayed out front as he drove away to get the win. Thompson, Shaun Scheel, Mark Deporter and Kody Hubred rounded out the top five.

Matt McKinney of Fort Atkinson captured his first career feature win in the 20 lap International main event. Starting from the pole, McKinney grabbed the lead on lap one with Waylin Willman dropping to second and Chad Olds in third. McKinney began to stretch his advantage while the battle for second raged behind him. Eric Connell and Travis Schneeberg moved up to fight for the runner up spot while Mark English watched from fourth. Schneeberg gained second on lap eight as English followed him past Connell into third. English quickly moved past Schneeberg into second and set his sights on McKinney. English continued to close the gap on McKinney. A caution with three laps remaining helped English pull up to the rear of McKinney for a three lap shootout to the finish. As racing resumed, English took a shot at stealing the top spot. But McKinney held off his advances and drove off to the checkers for the win. English was second followed by Casey Strese, Kyle Smith and Schneeberg.

After playing the bridesmaid the previous two weeks to Jim Tate, Waterloo’s Dustin Ward snapped Tate’s five race winning streak as he claimed the 25 lap Hobby Stock main event. Brent Gergen lead lap one from the outside of row one with Larry Moen trying to follow into second. Moen moved into the second position on lap three with Joe Edwards coming along in third. Edwards moved around Moen on lap six as Ward entered the top five. Ward followed Steven Sauer as the pair of drivers moved into third and fourth respectively on lap seven. Sauer continued to move forward, taking second from Edwards as Ward stayed in his tracks for third. Ward moved up to battle Sauer door to door as they closed on Gergen at the front. Tate joined the battle for second on lap 15. Ward claimed the spot on lap 16 with Tate in tow for third. Ward motored under Gergen and took the top spot for himself on lap 18 as Tate continued to fill his mirror. Tate applied heavy pressure to the new leader, but Ward held him off to get the win. Rounding out the top five were Tate, Sauer, Gergen and Zach Schmidt.

Watertown’s Bill Reynolds continued his domination in the Road Warrior division as he claimed another feature victory. Bryan Ellis took the initial lead on lap one with Rob Lange up to second. Lange quickly shot past Ellis to take the lead with Reynolds already up to third. Reynolds followed past Ellis into second and pulled alongside Lange at the front. Reynolds cleared for the lead on lap three and never looked back on his way to the checkers for the win. Lange, Bill Sweeney, Kyle Riedner and Ellis completed the top five.

Jefferson’s Bryan Gottschalk got the win in the 20 lap Bandit feature event. Starting from the pole, Gottschalk took the lead on lap one with Mike White up to second and Mike Heimann in third. Point leader Phil Wuesthoff moved to high side and grabbed third on lap seven. Wuesthoff pulled up to White looking for second while Gottschalk stretched his lead. Wuesthoff continued to look for a way past White, but couldn’t find one as Gottschalk ran off to get the win. White finished second followed by Wuesthoff, Tim Bristol and Heimann.

Next Saturday, September 11, is Season Championship night at Jefferson Speedway. Champions will be crowned in all six divisions with time trails beginning at 5pm and racing at 7pm.
