Shaun Scheel Captures Bumper To Bumper 50

CAMBRIDGE, WI (Saturday, June 23, 2018)          After inheriting the lead just past the halfway point of the Bumper To Bumper of Edgerton 50 lap Late Model main event, Shaun Scheel raced away to pick up the win. The victory gives the Lake Mills pilot his first such win of the 2018 season.

Andy Brocker and Josh Madell paced the pack to green with Madell taking control of the top spot on lap one while Brocker fell in line behind. On lap six, Stephen Scheel charged up to third while the battle for position raged behind the leaders. Scheel picked off Brocker on lap 13, moving into second behind Madell, who was enjoying a large lead by this point of the race. Dylan Schuyler followed into third a couple laps later as Scheel began to close the gap on Madell at the front. Scheel slowly inched closer to the leader as the laps ticked away, heading towards the midway point of the feature. On lap 28, Shaun Scheel made his move past Schuyler to pick up the third position as his brother, Stephen, began to challenge Madell on the point. On lap 30, the duo made contact exiting the second turn. This led to Madell spinning into turn three to force the sole caution of the event. Madell retired from the race while Stephen Scheel was forced to the rear on the restart. This handed the lead over to Shaun Scheel with Schuyler now second and Luke Westenberg up to third. As racing resumed, Scheel began to stretch his advantage slightly while Westenberg went to work on Schuyler for second. With 12 laps to go, Westenberg slipped past Schuyler for the runner up position. But Shaun Scheel was already well on his way to the checkers to score the win. Westenberg was second with Michael Grueneberg and Jason Erickson getting by Schuyler in the closing laps.

In Sportsman action, it was Brady Lilly of Milton leading most of the 30 lap feature event en route to getting the win. Lilly and Jake Biever led the field to green as they battled side by side for the lead. Lilly moved out front alone on lap five as Chris Jones took a turn next to Biever, looking for second. Jones moved past Biever on lap six, as the two leaders lined up nose to tail. Jim Taylor was next to get alongside Biever, as they fought for the third position. By lap 15, Taylor was running in third and trying to catch Jones for second. Taylor began to challenge Jones with less than ten laps to go, using the high side. This allowed Lilly to extend his advantage while the fight for second went on behind him. Taylor eventually got by Jones in the closing laps, but Lilly was on cruise control as he flew past the checkers first. Taylor was second followed by Jones, Terry Wangsness and Chris Chenoweth.

Whitewater’s Lucas Buckingham led each of the 25 laps in the Hobby Stock main event to secure the win. Starting outside Korey Bengsch, Buckingham took control on the opening lap with Jared Vike up to battle Bengsch for second. Vike moved into the runner up spot on lap five. A lap later, Bengsch got out of shape, allowing Scott Riedner and Kolton Guralski to get past as well. Riedner motored up to challenge Vike for second, getting alongside him on lap ten. Riedner cleared two laps later, bringing Dustin Ward along for third. Riedner spent the remainder of the race trying to reel in Buckingham while also keeping Ward at bay. Philip Wuesthoff joined the battle for second in the closing laps as well. This allowed Buckingham to remain in strong control of the top spot all the way to the checkers. Wuesthoff nipped Riedner at the line to claim second with Ward and Brandon Riedner rounding out the top five.

Bill Sweeney of Aztalan scored the win in the 12 lap Road Warrior feature event. Leroy Gronert and Bill Reynolds brought the field green. Mark Dewey made it a three wide fight for first on the opening lap with Dewey and Reynolds emerging side by side. Dewey cleared for the lead alone on lap two while Sweeney moved up to second. Sweeney quickly went to work on Dewey, stealing the lead away on lap five. Chris Gottschalk pulled up behind Sweeney with four laps remaining. Gottschalk got alongside Sweeney a lap later, but Sweeney held him at bay to secure the win. Gottschalk settled for second followed by Bryan Gottschalk, Dewey and Reynolds.

Watertown’s Nick Schmidt got the win after 20 laps of Bandit feature racing. James Junget led lap one from the pole with Tyler Edmundson up to second on lap three. Bart Brockman moved into third on lap four, bringing Schmidt along for the ride. Schmidt charged up to second just before contact between Edmundson and Brockman resulted in a multi car melee entering turn three to force the caution. Junget and Schmidt led the pack back to green, as Schmidt fired into the lead on the restart. Schmidt quickly pulled away from the rest of the field while Tyler Deschaine moved up to take over second. But Schmidt cruised to the checkers to get the win with Deschaine, Junget, Jamie Kohn and Chad Olds completing the top five.

Jevin Guralski of Wausau grabbed the victory in the 15 lap Bandolero feature main event. After a multi car incident on lap one, Chase Wangsness took the initial lead before Mason Surgener slipped by. Alex Hartwig followed into second just before the second yellow flag period on lap three. Surgener retook the lead on the restart while Guralski moved up to battle Hartwig for second. Following a third caution on lap five, Surgener and Hartwig made contact on the restart leading to a final yellow flag. Both drivers were forced to the rear on the restart while Guralski and Wangsness paced the field back to green. Guralski took command of the top spot as racing resumed, holding his advantage all the way to the checkered flag. Laney Osborne came on to finish the race in second followed by Anna Price, Robbie Rucks and Logan Taylor.

Next Saturday, June 30, is Triana’s Trophy Case night at the races with Kids Stock Car Rides as well as other popular kids events. Gates open at 1:30 with practice at 3pm.
