Shaun Scheel Captures Wisconsin State Championships

JEFFERSON, WI (Saturday, September 19, 2015)                   After Mother Nature delayed the start of the 35th annual Wisconsin State Championships at Jefferson Speedway, the racing action went late in the night on Saturday. When the dust settled, it was Shaun Scheel of Lake Mills standing tall as he was named the overall winner after combining finishes of second and fourth in the twin 65 lap Late Model features. The strong runs gave Scheel his first ever Wisconsin State Championship title in Jefferson Speedway’s premier division.

The first feature rolled off with Brandon Pendleton and Chris Quam leading the field of 24 hot shoes to the green. Pendleton owned a slight advantage at the completion of lap one, clearing for sole possession of the lead on the next circuit. Jacob Gille was third followed by Don Gaserude in fourth and Scheel up to fifth in the early going. The first of three cautions waved on lap 16, closing up the field with Pendleton still showing the way. As racing resumed, 2015 track champion Casey Johnson joined the top five. But on lap 22, contact between Johnson and Gille resulted in Gille spinning to bring out caution number two. Johnson was relegated to the rear of the field along with Gille for the restart, moving Scheel up to third behind Pendleton and Quam. Scheel began to work the low side of Quam on the restart, drawing even on lap 25. While that duo battled for position, Pendleton stretched his lead over the field. Scheel got by Quam on lap 30 as the leaders began to string out. The laps ticked away until a caution on lap 63 closed the field back up for a green-white-checkered finish. On the restart, Dale Nottestad slipped by Quam to take third, but nobody had anything for Pendleton at the front as he picked up the win in feature number one. Scheel was second followed by Nottestad, Quam and Gaserude.

Steve Dobbratz took command of the second main event from the pole with Stephen Scheel trying to hold Jason Erickson off for second. Erickson made the pass for the runner up position before the first sole caution of the second race flew on lap 12. Casey Johnson joined the top five on the restart as he began making his way to the front. Johnson took fourth on lap 16, and then third by lap 20 as he moved around Luke Westenberg. Johnson pulled up behind Erickson as he searched for way around. On lap 28, Johnson got a good run off turn two on the inside if Erickson. After a brief battle, Johnson cleared for second on lap 30 and set his sights on Dobbratz. Johnson began to pressure Dobbratz on lap 33. Using turn two as he launching pad, Johnson again got a great run off the corner to draw even with the leader on lap 36. One lap later, Johnson was out front and pulling away from the pack. Meanwhile, Shaun Scheel was methodically picking his way through the field trying to secure the overall title. With ten laps to go, Scheel was knocking on the door for third with Erickson doing his best to hold him off. Johnson cruised to the checkers for the win with Dobbratz coming home second. Erickson managed to hang on to third with Scheel settling for fourth. Rounding out the top five was Dale Nottestad. Combining finishes of second and fourth handed Scheel the overall title with Johnson taking second and Nottestad third.

In Sportsman action, Dave Trute of New Lisbon picked up the overall championship with strong finishes of second and third in the twin 35 lap feature events. Shawn Evans and Jim Taylor led the field to green with Evans holding the advantage on lap one. A caution on lap two slowed the action with Evans scored as the leader. Racing resumed with Evans out front followed by Taylor and Bobby Selsing Jr. Selsing went to work on Taylor for the second spot, making the pass on lap five and bringing Mark Deporter along for third. Deporter got by Selsing for second on lap 14 with Jay Kalbus joining him. Kalbus and Deporter fought for second briefly on lap 19 with Kalbus taking over a lap later. Kalbus continued forward under Evans, inching into the lead just before another caution on lap 22. On the restart, Deporter tried to low side of Evans, looking for second. The two pulled up behind Kalbus as Evans began to fight back on the high side looking to take back the lead. As Kalbus and Evans fought for control, the third caution period slowed the pace. Evans was scored as the leader this time with Kalbus back to second. On the restart, Kalbus slowed with problems handing second to Deporter. Kalbus pulled off the racing surface as Evans drove away to pick up the win. Deporter was second followed by Trute, Chris Chenoweth and Jason Thoma.

The second feature began with Jim Taylor and Andy Welter on row one. They battled for control with Kody Hubred right behind. On lap three, Hubred tried to go three wide into turn three. Contact between Hubred and Taylor resulted in Taylor spinning in front of the field and collecting several competitors. After a long clean up due to the melee, Welter led the field back to green with Bobby Selsing Jr up to second and Terry Wangsness in third. Wangsness got by Selsing on lap 12 with Jason Thoma in tow. Thoma began working the low side of Wangsness looking for the second spot. Dave Trute joined the battle on lap 22 with Jay Kalbus in his tracks. After two quick cautions, Trute drove to the outside of Thoma. Trute slid past Thoma and alongside Wangsness looking for second. Trute made the pass with two laps to go, but Welter was on his way to the checkers to get the win. Trute finished second followed by Wangsness, Thoma and Kalbus. As mentioned, Trute was named the overall winner for the Sportsman division.

Fort Atkinson’s Tommy Pfeifer claimed the overall title in the International division combining finishes of second and third in the twin 20 lap feature events. Devon Dixon led the first feature early from the outside of row one with Phil Malouf up to second on lap two. After a caution on lap four, Dixon and Malouf led the field back to green with Malouf now taking control of the point. Dixon returned to the inside of Malouf on lap seven with Pfeifer up to third. Pfeifer made it a three wide fight for first on lap nine, eventually taking the lead on lap 11 with Seth Reamer in tow for second. Reamer quickly drove under Pfeifer, clearing for first on lap 13. A caution with six laps remaining pitted Reamer and Pfeifer back against eachother on the restart. The duo battled side by side over the final six laps with Reamer owning a slight advantage. Reamer held that advantage all the way to the checkers to claim the win. Pfeifer was second followed by Merek Pankow, John Handeland and Malouf.

Kyle Stark took over the point from Keith Bell as feature number two got underway. Neil Higgins followed into second just before the caution waved on lap six. Stark and Higgins led the field back to green as they fought for control. On lap 12, Seth Reamer fell off the pace to force another caution, ending his shot at the overall title. Higgins and Stark led the field back to green once again with Stark firing into the lead. Stark motored away to pick up the win with Higgins hanging on to second. Pfeifer finished third followed by Devin Dixon and Mike Lambert.

After putting together finishes of second and third in the twin 25 lap Hobby Stock features, AJ Lloyd of Machesney Park, IL, was crowned the overall champion in the division. Lucas Buckingham took control of feature number one from the front row. After a quick caution on lap five, Phil Wuesthoff moved past Jeff LeFave to claim second on lap seven. While Buckingham tried to hold off Wuesthoff for the lead, Lloyd moved up to third on lap 13. Lloyd watched from third as Wuesthoff and Buckingham battled wheel to wheel for command. With four laps to go, Buckingham returned to the point allowing Lloyd to power to the outside of Wuesthoff for second. Buckingham charged to the checkers from there to claim the win with Lloyd picking up second followed by Wuesthoff, Dave Trute and Dustin Ward.

The second feature started with Dylan Buckingham taking the lead. Two early cautions slowed the pace with Buckingham still showing the way in front of Chuck Egli and Chester Williams. After a third caution on lap ten, Dustin Ward joined the leaders. Williams drove to the inside of Egli on lap 15 looking for second. Ward joined the battle a lap later making a three wide fight. Ward and Williams emerged with Lloyd joining them a lap later. After another three wide battle, Ward moved into control of second behind Buckingham with Lloyd in third. With two laps to go, Ward charged under Buckingham entering turn one. The duo raced raced past the white flag side by side with Lloyd watching from third. At the checkers, it was Ward for the win followed by Buckingham, Lloyd, Jared Vike and Williams.

Jefferson’s Chris Gottschalk picked up the win in the first of twin 20 lap Road Warrior feature events. Gottschalk joined Bill Reynolds as they fought for the lead on lap four. Gottschalk cleared for first on lap five before a caution slowed the action. On the restart, Gottschalk reclaimed sole possession of the lead with Reynolds falling back into a battle for second with Bill Sweeney. Sweeney eventually cleared for the position on lap 12, but Gottschalk was already on his way to winning the first feature. Sweeney was second followed by Craig Henning, Kenny Storkson and Reynolds.

Bill Reynolds took the early lead in the second feature with Craig Henning quickly up to second. Henning drove under Reynolds on lap six and moved into the lead two laps later. Gottschalk entered into a battle for second with Reynolds on lap 15 as Henning remained in control of the point. After a two lap battle, Gottschalk moved into second on lap 17. But Henning stayed out front to see the checkers first and get the win. Gottschalk was second followed by Reynolds, Sweeney and Bryan Gottschalk. With his finishes of first and second, Chris Gottschalk was named the overall winner in the Road Warrior division.

In Bandit action, it was Devon Dixon of Janesville claiming the overall title after finishing second and first in the twin 20 lap features. Adam Schook took the early lead on lap one of the first feature with Dave Schmidt up to second. Schmidt charged past Schook on lap three as Schook fell back into a fight for second with Brody Chilvers. Chilvers took over second on lap eight with Dixon following into third on lap 13. Dixon quickly challenged Chilvers for second, stealing the spot on lap 18. But Schmidt raced unchallenged to the checkers to win the first feature followed by Dixon, Chilvers, Josh Rusch and Brandon DeLacy.

After a caution to begin the second feature, Brian Beale took the lead with Steve Dickson up to second. Dickson began to challenge Beale for the lead while Dan Snyder moved up to third. Snyder took second from Dickson on lap five and charged up alongside Beale a lap later. After a caution on lap seven, Beale and Snyder led the field back to green with Snyder taking control after a side by side battle. Devon Dixon followed Snyder past Beale on lap 12 and quickly pulled up behind the new leader. Dixon drove to the low side of Snyder entering turn one on lap 14. Dixon inched forward and into possession of the top spot with three laps to go. Dixon drove off to pick up the win followed by Snyder, Josh Marx, Jamie Kohn and Chad Olds.

JEFFERSON, WI (Sunday, September 20, 2015)                      The TUNDRA Super Late Model Series made it’s return to Wisconsin’s Action Track as the 35th Wisconsin State Championships expanded into a third day this year. Joining TUNDRA were the American Ethanol Super Trucks Series, Upper Midwest Vintage Series, Midwest Dash Series, Legends and Bandoleros.

Entering the final event of 2015 at Jefferson Speedway defending TUNDRA Super Late Model Series Champion Dalton Zehr knew that there was only so much he could control. He controlled it well. Zehr dominated the final 75-lap feature of the season, propelling him to a five-point win in the Championship standings over Ty Majeski. Zehr captured the lead from early race-leader Ryan Farrell and outdueled defending TUNDRA Jefferson race winner Casey Johnson to pick up his second win of the season. Zehr had trailed Majeski by 25 points entering the main event. Majeski, who lost power steering early in the feature, nursed his machine to an eighth-place finish. Behind Zehr, Johnson finished second, Mike Lichtfeld was third, Ryan Farrell was fourth and Dan Lensing rounded out the top five.

Youngster Derek Kraus grabbed the early lead in the American Super Truck 40 lap feature and hung on to pick up the win. Starting from the outside of row one, Kraus took control on the opening lap and never surrendered the top position despite several cautions. Each restart would pit Kraus against another top competitor on the front row, but Kraus would rocket his truck back into the lead and stay there for all 40 laps. At the finish, it was Kraus out front followed by Camden Murphy, Chester Ace, Kevin Knuese and Danielle Behn.

In Upper Midwest Vintage action, it was Rex Rossier of Plover charging to the front of the field and capturing the win in the 20 lap feature event. Rossier sliced through the top five in the opening laps, catching early leader, Pat Heaney on lap eight. Rossier took over the point at the midway point of the race and held off a hard charging Heaney for the final circuits to pick up the win. At the checkers, it was Rossier out front followed by Heaney, Royce Rossier, Jim Reinhardt and Gene Pennington.

Kelly Evink of Machesney Park, IL, picked up the win in the Midwest Dash Series 25 lap feature event. Kevin Eckes led early on as Evink quickly made his way toward the front. By lap six, Evink was running in the third position behind Merek Pankow. Evink moved past Pankow on lap ten and as he motored under the leader, Eckes. After a brief battle, Evink moved into control of the point on lap 16 and stayed out front until the checkers flew. Following Evink across the stripe were Eckes, Pankow, Neil Higgins and Tom Pfeifer.

In Legends action, Aaron Moyer got the front and held off Jacob Nottestad to claim the 20 lap feature win. After battling Blaise Watters in the opening laps, Moyer took control of the lead on lap five with Nottestad in his tracks for second. Nottestad spent the remaining 15 circuits stalking Moyer and waiting for an opening. But Moyer remained in control as they flew past the checkers first with Nottestad right on his rear bumper. Riley Stenjem finished third followed by Watters and Kyle Vergatta.

Collin Slife of Coloma picked up the clean sweep in the Bandoleros after claiming fast time in qualifying, winning his heat race and capturing the win in the 10 lap feature event. Slife rocketed into control of the lead on lap one as he immediately began to pull away from the rest of the field. Slife’s lead continued to grow as the laps ticked away. At the checkers, Slife owned a large advantage followed by Chase Wangsness, Anna Malouf, Emma Hunstiger and Robbie Rucks.
